RE: Audi?S8: PH Buying Guide
Discussion
Cars from about the mid 2000s on are predominantly so complicated now that even dealers now are struggling to fix them. Not just the big stuff now either, last few years all the small cars are packed full of tech and computers for everything. I know of 2 friends lately with DS3 and a Mini (same engine) . DS3 has engine light on and rough running issues and Citroen have basically said they don't know whats wrong with it after changing many things. The Mini was only a year old and under warranty, had an engine light come on with no obvious fault. £8k 's worth of bits changed later they found it was a wire in a loom that had a break in it.

Audi A2 anyone; weren't they designed so that you could only open the front flap to check levels?
The service flap has 2 big knobs, twist a quarter turn and the bonnet lifts right off, biggest problem is finding somewhere to put it, but it's really not hard, plus no bonnet in the way while you work.Edited by JimbobVFR on Thursday 8th February 19:14
Really admire these as a car, their space, pace (no, I’m not going all Jaguar..) and 4wd make them an enticing prospect but some of those bills are of the ‘sell a kidney’ type (and I haven’t got a good kidney).
I must have caught these in a good day as 3yrs ago I saw two black ones go through BCA Nottingham, both with less than 100k and full Audi history and both for LESS than £10k; are you saying these have gone up in value or that auction-goers sense there’s a reason why they end up at an auction...?
Anyhoo, much as I’d love one I just couldn’t stomach any of those potential bills so I’d go Merc S Class AMG if I win this weeks Lottery..

I owned one of these for 18 glorious months. It is a crushingly competent, supremely comfortable, ravenously thirsty car. There's a decent amount of history about mine in my garage page.
The £1800 I spent on a warranty paid for itself three times over in that period. I'd own another in a heartbeat though. Simply beautiful.
Watch out for cracked rear light clusters, they often fail on pre-facelift cars. Soft close doors is another common failure point. There's a great community over at forum.a8parts.co.uk

£4k to change the starter is all bolx in the real world of non-main dealer servicing or home spannering. Yes, Audi will try and charge you for an engine removal but any Audi enthusiast forum will advise you just need a long extension bar (approx 1 meter) and approach it from the back end of the gearbox. The other bolt is easy but you do need to remove the oil filter. It's certainly not an easy job but it's defo not an engine out one.
I would have expected a little better research from PH here....
This all the way, I have an excellent (proper) mechanic who looks after my RS6 which has a similarly shoe-horned V10 in an even smaller space, and a couple of turbos too..and the maintenance costs are nothing like quoted in this. He also looks after my D2 S8, which must be one of the coolest cars I have ever owned I would have expected a little better research from PH here....

Not an S8 but I had the 4.2 v8 A8 and loved it. Hit 60 in under 6 so happy enough in a big motor. Absolutely loved it.
Would like an s8 but those bills are scary!
An A8 3.0tdi with a remap to 290bhp and close to 450 lb/ft would make us a great family bus I think.
did not take long for a mention of a tdi..Would like an s8 but those bills are scary!

running a space shuttle seems more appetising than a S8 however.
4.2 TDI is also a good alternative. Just make sure you get a post 2009. Great car if a little big making it tricky around town. Much sportier than its BMW and Merc counterparts strangely enough. Typical of VAG its let down by it auxiliaries such as door lock actuators, cheap electronic parts etc. which you'd find in a €10k Polo. Expensive to fix. Engine is a peach, unbelievably economical and bomb proof.

So that would have been £6k in 18 months. Thats more then I ever spent when I owned my 1970s Aston. Shocking for a car with plastics as high quality as an audis...The £1800 I spent on a warranty paid for itself three times over in that period. I'd own another in a heartbeat though. I just can't see the appeal tbh.
It's not particularly fast, has potential eye watering running costs, it looks st inside n' out and no doubt goes around corners like a balloon.
First time Ive ever heard an S8 being slagged off like that before. A little harsh don't you think? It's not particularly fast, has potential eye watering running costs, it looks st inside n' out and no doubt goes around corners like a balloon.
Yes I appreciate the high running costs "but looks **** inside and out and corners like a balloon" really?
