Shame that has already sold - great SOTW and the best in a while.

As long as it drives well and is mechanically ok, then the battered body wouldn't bother me - adds to the 'q car' appeal.

Lots of grunt, solid build quality and a nice torquey 5 cylinder rumble.

Interesting shed, didn't even know these existed. This one looks well past its sell by date though. How on earth do you crack the glass on in front of the speedo?
Many brave pills required to buy this
V70 and v60 of this era were notorious for the clock unit failing.
Not sure if that's correct. The early Ph2 V70s and S60s up to about 2004/5 suffered DIM failures a lot. Volvo fixed the issue around the facelift time, and this one here is a later S60.

As an example of just one perfectly innocent reason to have the clocks out, I had mine out on my V70 a few months back due to a very annoying long term rattle that I traced to a bolt behind the instruments that holds part of the dash in, which had worked completely loose. I'm not a ham fisted oaf though, so I didn't crack the instruments in the process.

As much as I'm pleased to see an R on SOTW, I've got to say this one just does not belong here. I'm only echoing what everyone else has said, but this is a nail, with only 2 weeks left on the MOT. I know SOTW is about risk and "fortune favours the brave" etc, but this week's example is a joke.

As a parts car, yes, absolute yes! If you've got the space and inclination, strip it and make a profit on the parts. As something to use, even if you were lucky enough to see it through the next MOT, it absolutely WILL throw up big bills and it's only a matter of time. Rs are not a cheap car to run, and one that has been run on the cheap will be a nail. I'd certainly be tempted to buy it myself as a parts donor to upgrade my own T5 with some of the tasty R bits, but anyone who bought this with visions of tooling about for a few months to a year or maybe even beyond would have to be massively naive or bloody stupid. Even with shedding mentality, this is just a step too far.

I feel properly old when a model I test drove when spanking new with a view to buying is now in PH shed section.......... frownfrown

Great car, with the best seats ever bar none.

Stonking engine, with that lovely 5cyl warble....

Big negative of these things when new was the awful Supertanker like turning circle.

My slightly knackered vanilla T5 estate with 2wd and 230bhp was datalogged in the mid-6s. That was with 150k mike's under its belt.

A 300bhp AWD R model will be mid to high 5s.
The Geartronic equipped cars are quite a bit slower than the manuals...

Volvo quote 0-62mph as 7.5secs for the auto and 5.7secs for the manual and the estates are +0.2secs for both.

Ah yes, turning circle: spiral up ramp at Gatwick multi-storey was too tight for it so you have to reverse a bit at the top of each level.

Can't be 100% sure. but based on the colour, location, condition and rarity of these, I may have some familiarity with this car.

Depends mostly if it still has working aircon, or if it had an AC delete put on.

Like all alleged 'fast' Volvos, it's a turd.

Trouble with the 2.0T 2006 onwards is the road tax is at least £500.

Bit like the Saab 9-3 Turbo X; Manual 5.4s, auto high 6s-7ish. With 280bhp.

Pointed this out to a chap a few years ago whilst at my local indie in Norwich as there was one in. His reply was....."How fast do you need to go?"

Well mate, given the running costs of the thing as fast as it'll go thanks!

That's a bit of a reach for SoTW - the fact the owner mentions damage which isn't pictured (you can see damage on the bumper on the wheel pic) is a massive alarm.

As is the crack in the clocks which is hard to do unless you're opening-them-up to make lights go away? (Some Volvos are prone to clock issues but I don't think this is one of those - we're talking the V70s with the fancy-nancy displays mostly?)

Brave pills non-optional here (autos deter me more for their non-repairability more than their performance issues)

I had one of the first ones new, fantastic engine and a nice place to be, that electronic chassis though was a disaster. I could drive over a manhole cover and it felt like the rear stepped out about six inches even in a straight line.

Volvo put four different sets of tyres on it in the first six months.

Drive it enthustiastically and it was fun but a liability when the front end stiffened up under braking and the road turned bumpy, it just wasn't smart enough and the abs kicked in leading to a very exciting time.

It was fast, comfortable and the engine was really good, in so many ways lovely but the most disappointing car I've ever owned. But for shed money it really is fantastic I guess.

Regards
Fred

I just bought a 2005, 2.5L T S60 as a snotter.

Looks half its age and mileage (114K) - hope it lasts me a few years.

Standard T5 at most then; the V70R wasn't available in white.

Friend had a new estate one of these and kept it for about 5 yrs. He had a DB9 and Mercedes too all new. He chose to use the Volvo as it was quick and discreet and was stopped on the motorway 3 or 4 times by traffic cops who seemingly were more interested in the car than his driving misdemeanours.

I'm certainly nowhere near brave enough to consider buying something like this, but it was definitely cheap!

But what stood out is how smart the shape still looks! I remember when they first came out it seemed like Volvo had gone from boxes to stylish overnight.

Err G-A-L-A-C-T-I-C mileage (although methinks it's likely to be genuine) and only about 2 weeks left on the MoT.

Not much in the way of detail in the ad (more and better photos needed before going to take a look even).

In principle the S60R was/is an interesting and fast car, but I think quite a few of the horses will have escaped.

Another thing I noticed was that it failed it's MoT in February 2016 on the basis of 2 worn tyres, that may well imply other basic maintenance has been skimped on. This thing is a turbo, if any of the oil changes have been skipped it might well be one breakdown away from the scrapyard/breaker.

Too risky! Move on. (Too many brave pills required on this one).
