Careless drivers overtaking cyclists in Cambridge face fines

I'm guessing you also haven't visited Cambridge recently, as the bus-stops on some of the main arteries have been repositioned seemingly deliberately to hold up the rest of the traffic. And no, they aren't luring very many people out of their cars either 'cause they're too expensive.
I drive and cycle in Cambridge - there are muppets on both sides and a bit of police action would be nice to see for a change. It will be interesting, however, to see if this is a 9 to 5 operation only or whether they'll be out at night for the (many) cyclists who don't bother with lights.
How refreshing to read what seems to me to be exactly how it is without the tribal motorist vs cyclist bolleaux. I too Drive and ride into Cambridge for work and concur, there are offenders on both sides but the propensity of poor/reckless cycling is frightening. I drive on eggshells (when it actually flows!) because regularly, and I mean REGULARLY, cyclists will act like they are on a complete deathwish. When I cycle (maybe 50-75% of the time) I am considerate to other road users and it seems to work out ok for me? Obviously there is still the occasional C U next Tuesday who just can't handle the fact you keep catching back up and overtaking - I don't quite get that mentality?
On a related note, what a waste of money the new junction at Long and Hills road is. All that time and congestion for what exactly? A set of lights that lets cyclists go 3 seconds before motorists and makes nearly every car driver make a false start? Utter madness.

I'm struggling to remember the last time I saw a cyclist jump a red light (Not saying it doesn't happen). However I saw 3 motorists jump red lights on my commute this morning maybe the police need to concentrate on them?
Yesterday, he waited for a car to pass and just set off while still on red.MrNoisy said:

It's obviously taken a while to get to that part of the country, it's nothing new.

They seem to have spoken to more cyclists than drivers https://www.hampshire.police.uk/news/general/give-...
As a road user, bicycle, motorbike and car on a weekly basis, I see all sorts of st riding/driving behaviour. Some by being inattentive, some lazy, some by trying to be a Darwin award contender.
Now since I learnt to drive, we’ve gone from 20 to 35 million vehicles on the road, we need to do something with the infrastructure and usage. (Rush hour) seems to grow each year, journey times keep increasing, local planners need to be radical or central government needs to intervene, otherwise we will be properly fked pretty soon, as we will be in total gridlock.

The majority of cyclists in Cambridge are fking idiots with no sense of self preservation or think they own the road.
Indeed. Mostly, self important students who haven’t yet realised that statistically they will not transpire to be all that important or earn anywhere near what they currently think they’re worth to society and champagne socialists who are struggling to cope with the discovery that they aren’t that important or worth that much. The same as in Oxford. But guess what? They’re still fellow humans and still deserve treating with the absolute basics of decency and respect.
And let’s face the other reality, what’s so vitally important about you that getting delayed a minute or two would cause a negative emotion? Neither of you are remotely important or of any real value to society so what’s wrong in your heads to make you think that you are so special?
Why is it that you don’t leave five minutes earlier and become part of the solution instead of wilfully insisting like an underdeveloped child to be part of the problem? What’s wrong with you that someone on a bike in front of you causes some form of contempt or inability to cope emotionally with basic road interactions?
Aren’t you the snowflakes?!!!!!!!

I take it cyclists will be fined for overtaking slow moving cars too closely? And red light jumping? And riding on the pavement? etc etc
Afterall, the law should be applied equally.
In case the driver falls off the car?Afterall, the law should be applied equally.
Great reasoning there. As usual it will only be those that can't respect other road users that will get worked up about this.
Never understood the self entitled attitude of some car drivers. It's not your road it's a shared highway. If there is no room to pass safely you don't pass. Simple.
Ps I'm a car driver first and very occasional cyclist.

If people used the roads in a reasonable way then we wouldnt have all these problems. Give each other space and wait until the lights say you can go.
Exactly. The trick with those conversations where polarised views seem to prevail would be to stop using the words "cyclists", "drivers" or "pedestrian" (although I just did and will carry on in this very post ;-)) and accept that by and large they cohabit pretty well as road users considering the sparsity of space on offer. There will be incidents but I don't believe that you can castigate groups of human beings based on what vehicle they happen to use at a particular time. I find that considerate drivers tend to make for considerate cyclists and vice-versa. Slight caveat though, there are presumably more cyclists who drive regularly than drivers who cycle regularly so the former may occasionally have a wider perspective and a viewpoint formed out of experience rather than assumptions. Can you point out where in my post I mentioned anything about me driving in Cambridge or my worth to society?
As it happens I very rarely drive in Cambridge. But I do walk through it every week day. I see more cyclists go through red lights than motorists, more cyclists on the pavements than motorists, more cyclists with no lights than motorists.
On the odd occasion I do drive into Cambridge I give all cyclists more room than I probably need to. Purely because they are so unpredictable and fking idiots with no self preservation.
And as it happens. I am actually quite important to society.

I saw a car driver with a VERY LARGE dog on his lap last week, thruppenny-bitting it (the car) round every corner on the part of the journey I witnessed. Reported to 999. When I got home I looked the vehicle up on DVLA car check, and the MOT expired 6 weeks previous! I wonder what the outcome was? It never fails to amaze me that some readers here are quite happy to admit publically they are ste at driving around other road users
I could understand if it was difficult. Just give as much space as you can.
Personally I'm happy if I could stick my arm out sideways and NOT touch the car passing me, that's probably more or less enough.
And go only a few mph faster than the cyclist. Anything above 12-15mph faster just makes me think you're a ! Since it's the wind draft that causes part of the issue
And showing off by blasting past me at 30+ faster than me, means I will sincerely hope you die of a horrible slow agonising venereal disease
Simple.
And also don't blame me as a bike rider, for the sins of other wkers on bikes. I don't blame you for the sins of other drivers. I view you all as individuals
