I live in Hertford and park near the station up the hill. It's a residential area with large semi/detached houses, most have drives for two cars. I've noticed a few times when I'm parking up dustbins being used to reserve a large spot that could hold two cars. This is at 7.30am in the morning, which I find odd as well, when I got back this evening there is one car parked in the middle of the space so no other car can park there a well.

I get that they are annoyed when they can't park their third car right outside their house, however they have no legal right and are obstructing a highway. My sense of righteous indignation is far stronger, than any empathy for their predicament.

So I have a plan, as want them to stop.

First I've printed polite notices pointing out that what they are doing is illegal and I will inform the police(Reluctant to do this as such a waste of time for them). Next time I see them there I am going to stick one notice in each bin handle.

Furthermore will stick it in their cars windscreen wipers, I made a note of the reg so I can check it's the right car.

If they still persist, I'm just going to move the bins next time I see them - even if I don't need to actually park in that spot.

Failing that, next time I will just stick my car in their precious spot.

What's everyone's thought on how to approach this? I have a shed station car that they can scratch all they like, so not worried about any retributions. Basically am I being an utter tw@ or am I right in being miffed by their behaviour?

Cheers

I vote you take the day off and hide in the bin one day.

Jump out when they try to move it to put the car there.

Indeed. If you can hold of a carved wooden leg to sell, bung a few quid on me.

Has the station not got a car park you could use?

7 quid a day, you can get a week pass but it's touch and go if I can get a space, so often end up parking up the hill anyway. Used to park there, but more stressful than driving up the hill

I'd torch the dustbins.

Don't fancy a criminal record to be honest.

You could start by just moving the bins out the road so someone can use the space. after a few days of that they might give it a rest.

My only concern is they use three bins, so they will hear it. That's why I was thinking the notes first

So let’s say one of those houses has a skip being delivered later that day and to be placed on the road as if it went on the drive the only angle it could go on would mean that their 2 Cars would have to be on the road this by doing this they save one place for another person wanting to park.

What if the house you do this to has an occupier who is old and on a daily basis the hospital bus comes round to pick them up for hempdialasys (there is one poor lady on my street where they are picked up - and wheeled to the vehicle it has to be parked up (luckily no parking issues here so always empty for her (+ the street know to keep it clear).

What if the removal lorries are arriving and they will park up taking the entire two spaces plus the drive enteranxe up for them to pack up the house furniture into the wagon.

What if they have a relative coming to visit and want to save the spot in front of the house to stop them having to carry luggage a long distance to the house.

Maybe they are having the council out to increase the drop down kerb later that day
Maybe they are having building supplies dropped off and need close access else the lift on the wagon will not reach.
Maybe they are having a disabled lines painted later that day.

Maybe they dislike the fact that your only parking there to avoid the £7 a day parking fee yet due to that their visitors have to pay the £7instead

There could be a million reasons why.

Now let’s say hypothetically on my street and that bins were put out. Guess what I and all the others would do..... ah yes you know we currently park 2 Cars off the road on our drives guess what we will put our cars on the road so when you come in the morning (saving your £7/day parking fee) there will be no spaces for you to choose.
And/or residents can and will rightly vote and push the council for residents parking permits

So go for it but you’d be a cock socket in doing so & likely end up screwing yourself over.

I see. You could go really early and carry them, that would be quiet. Its a bit daft but it might be amusing too.

Totally agree, this is not a one off though, I agree with blocking for moving, etc. I'm not looking to screw someone over, but systematic selfishness is what pisses me off.

Interesting question actually, are residents permits likely in an area where everyone has a drive? Doesn't really make sense, as they would then have to pay to occasionally park outside their own house?
