Renault Clio 1.2 Freeway.

my goal is to essentially run it into the ground.
They are hard to kill. My wife's had a MY2000 one since 2004. 14 years on and it's still doing city duties. It's had a few broken springs, it's eaten a few coil packs, it's had a couple of crank sensors and I've had the sunroof re-sealed twice.

The a/c compressor has just failed which is annoying and the alarm has been kicking off randomly when I'm driving along for years. I just disconnected the siren to get round that one.

But other than that just keeps going and going.

EDIT; I don't have any massive enthusiasm for it - more a feeling of minor amazement that an 18 year old French car still functions.

Audi TT 3.2.
It’s a golf in a dress
It doesn’t handle well
It’s heavy
It’s not that quick
It’s unreliable

I like it though, and it’s probably a better bet than the ratty sun £8k 911 I was going to buy!

I may be on the podium with this

The worst selling model in Merc history....a 2005 Vaneo.
It looks like a dildo on wheels, build quality is terrible, 1.9 L petro auto (gutless is a diplomatic description)....around town it is absolutely unbeatable.
Exterior dimensions of a 4 door Polo, space inside more then an S klass, sliding doors, massive boot, amazing visibility, nothing comes close to its practicality around town.
I dread having to replace it.

I drive a 2002 147, and its been great so far. It is starting to feel a bit tired and doesnt like the cold, but who does?

The 147 is just old enough to be seen as "old", has the alfa stigma of rust and unreliability, an oil drinking, low power 1.6, with too much weight to be fast, alfa purists will scoff "rebadged fiat" at you while driving away in their old transaxles. The PH masses will deride it for not doing 0-60 sub 6 seconds and being WWD.

But i love it, and i couldnt see myself replacing my 147 with something non 147-ish (as in, a GT or a 156 might work as well)
Mine was great, I miss that car.

I've been on PH a long time and actually there is not a PH Hive Mind, as proved by this thread.

Yes there are a few very obvious types who appear on lots of GG threads to pose and drop heavy hints about how well they think they are doing in life.
But I believe the silent majority just like cars of all sorts.

Especially when you compare them to the interior of the Jaguar S-Type, launched at the very same motor show

OK, so 3 years later Jaguar sorted out the S-Type's dodgy interior, but it's an interesting contrast.
Read somewhere that the inspiration for the S-type's cockpit was the Spitfire (as the Jag factory in Castle Bromwich is where they used to make Spitfires in the War) and the curvy thing was supposed to represent the propeller.

Yeah, right.

Spoken by a true Pistonheader who for the past seven years has been the proud owner of a V6 Rover 75 with similar spec interior to the photo above. And has no plans to change it for something less inspiring.

PH says that is crap?! Gee, tough crowd. A bit unpolished stock perhaps, but one of the best BMW engines, last of the NAs, in one of their nicer packages. I was looking for one a while ago but gave up as they are super rare (as manuals) over here. Everybody bought the effing diesels or the much fatter 135...

Generally I'd say it isn't a PH car, but more recently the new one is becoming something of a golden child on here.

I love it. Just see it as the ultimate no fks given daily, you can drive flat out the whole time, it's fairly chuckable when you get used to it. And you can whack it off of kerbs, potholes and other road detritus without much worry.

Now the car I drive is crap... 1.25 fiesta mk6. Very slow, too heavy and thus it's thirsty for the size of car
Love/hate relationship
The Fiesta Mk6 is among the most fun hatchbacks I've ever driven.

These Berlingos with the 1.9 DW8 engine are the most reliable cars on the road
You might never want one but if you had to you would be impressed with its reliablity I have taken two 1.9 Berlingo vans to 350K on the original box and engine
Our company ran 6 of these. 6 drivers keeping 1 van each as a daily.
2 clutches, 3 gearboxes and a vast quantity of disks and brakes. (Loaded up, traffic bumps and London traffic)
Loved and hated them in equal measure.
Most of the vans were about 3 years old

Speaking of Suzuki, I have a thrilling Baleno BoosterJet SZ-T.

Now a year old, I only bought it because my local Suzuki dealer is nearby and doesn't give me the 'Do you really not want the Scotch-Guard for only £400?' bull-spit that my last Volvo dealer tried on. And it came with 'free' grey metallic paint, and the rear-view camera, and some mats.

The Baleno was designed in Turin, has a 1 litre Japanese engine, an IHI turbo, and was made in India. Tomorrow's car, today! Two million Indians cannot be wrong!

Think Swift, with more legroom. BoosterJet triple engine has two modes: granny-pootle, and turbo-nutter. Although peak nuttering only gives 110 bhp. But that is brisk enough.

It's actually Quite Nice, to the point I can't be arsed to get anything else.

As to sales in England, I've never seen another on the roads here. Another Pistonheader has one, so UK sales are at least two, or possibly, three.

Just parted with my crap car after 7 years. I loved it.

It was a 2003 Land Rover Discovery 2. Went by the name of Humpty.

It was getting very very tired and I decided that rather than spend 30 or 40k on a fancy newer 4x4 I'd throw a few grand at the old thing and bring it back up to a vaguely acceptable standard whilst adding a few fun mods.

Dropped it off at my 4x4 specialist - who unsurprisingly I have visited numerous times in the past few years.

2 weeks later got a text that says - "it's fu*ked mate"

Went to see the guy and he handed me the job card after showing me some terrifying pictures of the chassis.

Job card said.

"Chassis more fu*ked than Professor Fu*ked at the University of Fu*k, Fu*kville"

He gave me 200 note for the car and I walked away feeling sad. The old bus was only 250 miles short of hitting 100k.

During my ownership it sat in the drive as many shinier cars came and went. TVR Chimaera 500 (should never have sold that) , Mini Cooper JCW, Jaguar 5.0 XKR to name a few.

On the upside I clearly narrowly avoided having the car break in half after hitting a pothole. Those chassis pictures were unbelievable.

I have a 2006 Land Cruiser too on 110k miles and drives like a new car. Those old Land Rovers sure have character but they rust, leak and fall apart at an alarming rate unless you treat them like an cherished exotic.

Not brave enough to buy a like for like replacement and def not brave enough to buy a Disco 3!

Nissan X-trail might be a good bet I guess. Other suggestion?

TD

I used to have this beast!

And i loved it to bits! It had a really clunky 2 litre petrol engine , Handled like an aircraft carrier , Manual gearbox that felt like it was off an old truck but it was awesome!

If i had more money i would buy another in a heartbeat!

I have a 2.0TD 2003 147 and it is bloody brilliant.

Genuinely good fun and punchess far above its weight in that respect. Under valued and under appreciated but would run rings around a Golf and Focus for anything like similar money if you like driving.

Another vote for the Suzuki sleeper here.

Dodgy alloy and all.

There's only ever two cars that have really made me smile and laugh, one was a new, first batch import to Germany, lhd 205gti; and this Swift 1500 vvt. All 105 bhp of it. 60 series tyres and drums at the back too.
Same as the 205, hmmm.
