The car seems great but I don't get the naming strategy...
If you're developing an EV, why would you use 'E-Pace' for a car that doesn't have an electric motor, and something else - 'I-Pace' - for one that does?
Maybe there is some logic there but its lost on me!
It confused me for a while until I worked out that E was last decade’s letter and that this decade it’s I. If you're developing an EV, why would you use 'E-Pace' for a car that doesn't have an electric motor, and something else - 'I-Pace' - for one that does?

It's nearly as bad as Chevrolet's strategy of calling their cars the 'Bolt' and the 'Volt'. If you're developing an EV, why would you use 'E-Pace' for a car that doesn't have an electric motor, and something else - 'I-Pace' - for one that does?

I’ve been playing with the Jaguar configurator for a new I-Pace and was shocked when it came to the seats. The base option is Luxtec which is just a fancy word for vinyl. So here we have a 2010s car with 1960s technology for the seats. If you want leather (which I don’t) that will cost you a minimum of another £2.5k. The more expensive leathers are just that - over £4k. Save the fanfare for JLRs much-hyped “premium textile”. This sounds good and probably feels good too, being made of wool and other fibres but the cost - wait for it - £6.4k ! . Even in the 1980s most mainstream cars had nice, comfortable cloth seats for a very reasonable price. Can we have some of these again, please, JLR.
Modern vinyl is worlds away from the 70s stuff. Mercedes do it too but call it Artico, BMW Sensatec, Lexus NuLuxe.
Looks and feels very much like leather but doesn't need attention with special products, wears much better and far less prone to damage from kids and pets. Lots of manufacturers have for ages in their "leather" interiors just faced the seats with leather and used this stuff elsewhere.
And while it may be a source of amusement, plenty of people are making a choice to not sit on dismembered animal skins when there's a decent alternative.

Car ‘leather’ these days is an interesting term.
It’s a vaguely animal related substrate that’s then clearcoated.
So it might not be a bad idea at all to leave animals out of the whole setup - there’s no benefit apart from being able to call it leather ( at a pinch).
It’s a valid point but one that can be countered as cows are very bad for the environment so having one killed is eco friendly. . Plus, vinyl is made from oil so it’s bad for the environment. It’s a vaguely animal related substrate that’s then clearcoated.

I can't see how it is any different to Mercedes Artico which doesn't seem to attract the same level of disdain - I would also guess most people aren't that aware of that either.
So long as it doesn’t make you look like some council ‘cloth seated’ punter. That’s what really matters. Types of 'leather'
Aniline Leather: The most expensive
Semi Aniline Leather: ...
Pigmented Leather: ...
Bi-Cast: ...
Anything below Semi Aniline is rubbish.
Completely fake leather are PU leathers which are durable but don't have that nice smell and they don't breath which isn't very nice in hot weather.
Cost wise you are looking at £30 per Sq metre for decent real leather. £5 per Linear metre for the PU. Where it gets very expensive. Vendors selecting so many 'perfect hides' to use in the making of a seat. All hides will have imperfection(well most) so you can imagine Rolls for example.
Quality tanneries don't sell by the Sq M, they sell by the hide which will range in size. It is up to the upholsterer to cut the hide around the imperfections they can live with.
edited to add. Rolls Royce 'claim', not only do they use the best hides (no doubt true). They claim they only select 1 in 100 hides. I call BS on that. And it takes 12 hides to make one seat(single).
The best leather you can buy (furniture), Italian, very soft. Lovely stuff is around £200/hide.

How expensive is alcantara (or equivalent)? That's artificial (but people think it's suede).
It varies enormously depending on quality. Genuine Alcantara (which is a brand name) seems to be about £100 per square meter but you can get "fake suede" for a tenth of that. kambites said:
