There is a 3.5 V6 petrol Vel Satis up for sale near to me for £1250 - I was tempted, but I've been way too busy to go and have a look.

How much is a towbar, £100?

Not a difficult DIY job, electrics might be a little bit of a challenge mind.

At least £160 for a towbar +fitting. (according to Google)

Could get expensive.

Sold my RX300 and now looking for a replacement. Doesn’t need 4x4 and just bought the RX from auction early last year because it looked interesting and reliable which it was (and the car I went for was out of budget and I just wanted to get home) Time for a change so looking for an estate or mpv type that is preferably diesel but as ever I’m looking at stuff that’s massive engined and petrol.

I really need some self control smile

Laguna looks a good buy. Pretty sure that Vel Satis has been for sale for a while at a higher price....

thats the issue, whos going to spend £300 to fit a towbar to something so odd, not an issue for a focus, if the car dies you just take it off and fit it to another.

realised i forgot the first part of the story

My dad in his wisdom tried to drive is V50 through a ford to clean the underside, it died. All working except the seatbelt pretensioning/airbag system which hes thrown £500 at with a local auto electrician. MOT has now expired and wont pass with the fault so hes on the lookout for something big enough to sleep in overnight and tow his caravan.

Problem is hes so far killed a megane scenic and a V50 through abuse so both Renault and Volvo are clearly rubbish rofl

no point him spending any more money as the abuse would just cost more in repairs.

I've shown him that grand voyager......

That is the Vel Satis near to me. I really thought it would be snapped up at that price, but the advert has been running for a while - I keep trying to find time to go and have a look, but something subconscious must be putting me off....

Are these Vel Satis very unreliable?

Dunno about the petrol ones, but my 3.0 V6 diesel (like the one posted yesterday^) was entirely issue-free for me. Very healthy mid-range oomph too hehe

I’ve got no idea why but I’ve started looking for a small car that’s done tiny miles to keep as a spare and maybe to become that slightly odd looking fella at classic car shows who knows he shouldn’t really be there. Having last bought a car for £500 in 1997 I’m wondering if it’s really possible to get something useful for under that where I wouldn’t need to go to welding school.

Pretty much every car under a grand that I have seen for sale , and then investigated further, has had some sort of rust mentioned on the MOT history.
