Best of the Bargain Basement (Vol.3)
Discussion
I do 80 miles a day at the moment so sadly has to be diesel for monetary reasons. I'm aware that more modern petrol engines can get up near the sort of MPG I'm after but the cost of entry to that sort of vehicle is prohibitive at the moment.
For a bag of sand, this'll do for hopefully a few years.
Had an Ibiza mk4 with the same engine that I bought at 136k that's now done 212k and all the electrics have started to pack up, so made sense to change for the cost of repairing.

Much irrational want, my Galaxy 2.0 is still going surprisingly strong and is actually a good laugh to drive and unbelievably practical.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-Grand-Espace-Pr...

It’s been misfiring of late but I seem to have remedied 90% of that by decadently filling it with super unleaded...like giving a street mongrel a bowl of Caesar’s I presume.

Cheap Kia update.
If you do buy a bargain basement Cee’d check the underneath for rust. Then check it repeatedly. Mine shat it’s self in a big way as the Z axle had basically rotted away and dropped a rear wishbone onto the floor.
£120 ebay part and two days in a pals workshop fixed it. But using a mechanic and new parts would have written the car off.
Other than that it’s coping well with being asked to cover about 400 miles a week.

Thought I would provide an update on my 72k mile, 2001 Honda Accord 1.8S vtec that I bought in May for £750.
Er, there is no update - it just works - the aircon, electric front window, everythingI Not that there is much to go wrong. To be fair I have only done a few thousand miles as it is mainly my rainy day/running late station car. It is just a boring and practical car - I managed to fit a new dishwasher in the boot with the seats down.
The only thing is, I have started doing a few longer journeys for work, and the seats are uncomfortable after an hour or so. I don’t think there is a solution to this, so I am now exploring my options. I want big, comfy and auto.

Hows this? replaced an E92 M3
2008 Fiat 500 'Sport'. 1400cc 100 HP engine in it. 70k miles
Cost: Free
Insurance: Paid for
Tax: Paid for
Brekdown Cover: Paid for
New tyres, bosch wipers, brakes look pretty new. new sparks.
Petrol aside (does 240 miles to £40 which after an M3 seems good) Ive put some oil in it that cost me £15.
I was ment to punt it on after using it as an interim car, but quite like it and a month after I got it I put it through an MOT which it passed. Needs some bits doing to it - ball joint and suspension top mounts. Ill sort those DIY next year, looking at euro car parts the cost of replacement parts is laughable. I dont think its worth anything really, serves me as my stter currently - drive to a customer site and park it up in some random car park and not get precious about it. I might try sell it next year.
Really fun car and seems to surprise a few people when you wind it out, and quite nice to do motorway journeys in suprisingly.

My door frames are rotting alarmingly. Just need it to last 2 more years!
Were there any warning signs in the MOT history?

The MOT history mentions corroded wishbones and rear springs. But this was structural and is something the recovery guy who picked it up for me had never seen on any car ever. My door frames are rotting alarmingly. Just need it to last 2 more years!

Replaced the springs and bushes while it was apart to be sure. It now drives and sits slightly better.
The door top rust is caused by faulty seals and as such should have been picked up under the 7 year warranty but wasn’t and isn’t covered by the anti corrosion warranty. I’m not too worried about the door tops as the rust is just light but I’d suggest spending time under yours with a torch to check the bits where bolts go.
I need a bigger car so the xsara (2004 89k) is going .
I can get 175 scrap for it but it seems such a shame to scrap it.
It's not without its faults , sticky back door locks and a slightly whiney gearbox. It's drives fine and will pass it's mot in Jan.
Should I scrap or plumb the depths of the dark web on gumtree and see if I can get 250/300 for it with 11 months MOT.left ?

Depends how much hassle you're prepared to put up with.
Option 1 is quick and easy; you get the cash and get on with your life.
Option 2 is likely to waste a lot of time and test your patience; you'll probably get offers of less than the scrap value.
