Quite like the idea of this mk1 Mondeo for 500 quid. Seems an honest car.

Those exterior pictures must be twenty years old - they're from before it started growing tape on the bumpers

'93 plate Carina e / 1.6 / 120K / last owner 18 years. £450

These are the sort of cars I look out for - sadly too far away from me, but someome on here might want a bargain shed ;

Or spend a few quid and polish and could be a future modern classic. These cars were built well.

Have fun guys wink

Now that carina has got to be worth £350 of someone's money. Hankook tyres too!

Now £350. I suspect that, at the cost of a weekend away, that car will be very hard to beat. It will undoubtedly be an automotive cockroach in a good way, and be utterly dependable. Great spot.

I'm tempted myself, just because.

Saab 9-3 Estate for £650?

An mot check reveals that it's recently failed mainly on a few suspension components, looks doable for a home mechanic.

I'm almost tempted...

Any suggestions for an 'interesting' commuting car for thread budget?

Needs 30-40MPG and not to make me want to kill after driving ~25 miles each way through london.

There used to be loads of quirky/interesting stuff around for this budget, but now it seems to be mostly junk frown.

Sad news, my Rover 75 I got for free has broken today!
The ECM has gone for a swim in the plenum chamber because nobby over here forgot to check and drain it!
So if anyone has a 75, do it today!
I might have to get one of my other cars lot's now.

Inability to MOT current MG + Ebay =

The £345 MG TF. 11 months MOT, somewhat knackered.

Should be good for a few months fun and then parts for my proper MG.

I almost took a punt on a 500 quid MG TF from a scrapyard and only didn't because it was an auto!

What's the worst that can happen at that price?

Hi! I wonder if I could get a little advice? Prior to my daughter's birth I practised bangernomics with some degree of success (excepting a fun but expensive dalliance with a 3-series soft-top). My economic situation makes continuing with monthly payments for my newer car difficult so have started looking at sub-£1000. I've looked at a 2001, Saab 93 SE Auto, years MOT, lots of history (inc turbo reconditioned 2 years ago), seems to drive OK but I've never owned an automatic (and it's from a dealer)......is there anything particular I should be looking out for? I'm a bit wary of Saabs! Any other ideas? Don't mind if it's big, I'm old enough for reasonably cheap insurance and can do some basic maintenance. Mostly town driving with a couple of short motorway journeys per week. Thanks for any ideas (sorry if it seems lazy but I don't have the same time for the research as I used to).

(planetary) Autos are usually strong, if the shifts are jerky it's usually the old fluid causing issues, I'd usually walk or use it to knock down.

Main problem with a petrol saab is sludging killing the engine, ensure its had fully synthetic oil and if its had its sump dropped recently that's a good thing.

Pretty solid cars on the whole, saab liked to overengineer stuff, even when GM were squeezing them.

For something cheap and easy to work on I'd always recommend Japanese

The bulkheads crack on those too so be careful of that. I had a 2.0t 9-3 convertible SE for a course of years, it was the second car I ever bought when I was 19 and I loved it. Paid £900 for it, never serviced it and ragged it everywhere and it didn’t cause me any hassle.

It even had a receipt for the head gasket having been done a year or so prior!
