The thing is I spend 1.5-2 hours a day in the car commuting so I would like it to be a nice enough place to be, but obviously also reliable.

First thought was try and find an automatic civic or corolla of early noughties vintage and retrofit a decent head unit with Bluetooth and just enjoy the reliability and cruise to work in that for a while.

Does anyone have any better recommendations for someone that does up to 20k miles per year commuting and 5k private miles?
How flexible are you on price? I have done something similar, but with a focus on continental travel so wanted something fast, reliable and safe. I bought an 02 Lexus 430 for 3,500 and it's been perfect. I get very cheap petrol though, so that makes a difference at an average of 28 mpg. You could look for something with LPG already fitted.

I know the old find something local and in the best condition, but I tried that a couple of times with A Saab, a Volvo and a Peugeot and none of those lasted very long before becoming uneconomical to repair.
Look at what private cabbies use. Avensis', octavias and pruises. Im averaging 15k in my £900 octavia, spent £200 making it a nice place to be, £200 fixing the air con and £100 on fixing other bits. £140 a year tax and averaging 55mpg.

They key to BB is buying something someone has sank alot of money into already, let someone do the preemptive and necessary maintenance and you should be onto a winner.

Audi TT convertible for £700 , no proof of cambelt change and the electric roof doesn’t work .
Is the roof currently up or down?
Even if it was broke in the down position and you kept it in the down position it wouldn't matter !!
It might matter quite a lot if you didn't have a garage.
Um, not sure what happened there. was meant to say 'and you kept it in the garage' !!

Nice but a bit steep for £1500 surely?

And "low miles" at 53k miles - which possibly means the cam belt(s) have never been replaced...?

MOT history suggest it's been a bit unloved for the past couple of years too.

I think it's probably worth £895 top.

Either the MOT history site is broken or that 406 hasn't had a single MOT advisory in the last 12 years. Someone buy it!

I forgot how beautiful those 406 coupes were. Sort of like a poor man's Maserati in its appearance.

Love this one, partly because I had a 1995 1.4 RT as my 2nd car, which I had for about 3 years and it was utterly reliable. I bought it on 40k and sold it on 105k without any problems, then the new owner wrote it off within a month. Great little cars. Went in a mates Clio 16v late last year and forgot how small they are though by modern standards, looked like a toy car sat next to my 2010 Focus ST.

They are good cars to drive as well nothing exciting but not bad. A V6 would be interesting and I would say a future classic.

Been looking at cheap stuff I could stick on a 0% credit card for a few months at the end of my lease.

Found this Mondeo with a completely spotless (compared to the interior which needs a good day's clean) MOT history, may be of use to someone. Ghia model so most of the toys including cruise and Sony stereo. Saloon body and towbar might put some off however.

^ Nice mondeo. I forgot they did those light interiors. They are quite rare. Makes the cabin nice and light though they do show the dirt.
