Slowest "Performance" Brand Car ?
Discussion
I always thought this was sort-of-a-good-thing. Aston made the Cygnet so they could continue making crazy no-compromises V12/V8 cars. If Merc / BMW sell a metric ton of looks-great-goes-ok diesel hatchbacks with a fancy bodykit and 20" wheels.. and that gives them the financial freedom to develop and sell great stuff like the M2 / A45, then that works for me. Same story with the Cayenne. No Cayenne, no GT3 RS 4.0.
If they looked like your gran would drive it, young people wouldn't buy them. I don't care what badge they have to stick on the side to sell them, it's all for the greater good!

I've done a fair few miles since this thread has popped up, and I've been looking out at A Class AMG Line models. Not a single one had an AMG badge on it, the only A Class with an AMG badge I saw was an A45
Agreed. Though i think the point was that some people referred to their A180d AMG Line as "the AMG" or "the A Class AMG", or that you can pretty much get an A45 replica in an A180d or more pertinently to our own car, people say to us "oh my mother / younger sister / aunt drives one of those" when they see our A45. No. She doesnt.alec.e said:
Winds me up more than it should, a friend who is a car guy repeatedly refers to his loaner E Class diesel as a AMG Merc...
Best one I saw was at my local garage when a chap was filling up what I thought was the E55 AMG, it had the quad pipes and the badges on the sides and boot...but he was filling it up using the diesel pump! Why would anyone want to pretend they have a car they don't actually have?! cerb4.5lee said:

That's perhaps just the people you know
Yes most of them aren't car enthusiasts. It's just a red A class to them. It tends to be two extreme ends of the spectrum - its like "st it that an A45??" or "yes, we were going to get one of those, but we got a Golf 1.6 TDI SE instead".Edited by daemon on Wednesday 21st March 10:35

It is image. Absolutely. Whereas many of us would debadge our C63s or rebadge an M3 as a 318i - some people go to great lengths to make sure others know they have something perceived as being "better than you..."
That made me think back to someone on here who put a 520d badge on his M5 just for the crack! daemon said:

Bit late to the party, but...I nominate the 2004-2005 model year Honda Civic 1.6i VTEC Sport (EP2 chassis designation). Looks sporty, has some type-R trim bits, allegedly the suspension from a type R (can anyone confirm that?) but woefully slow. 110 bhp at the crank.
I looked into this for my wife for the FN2, the model after that, because she wanted Type R handling and suspension, but not the running costs. I never got a definitive answer, but I was told by a dealer that (for the FN2 at least) it was a step between normal and Type R suspension. We drove a standard one, which I thought was an extremely good everyday car, but my wife hated the suspension so much that she bought a Type R (which she's now selling several years later due to high running costs!).I must say though, personally I always assumed Sport meant slightly different suspension and handling, but not necessarily an increase in performance. I don't assume a sports car is faster than a normal car (for example an MX5 is slower than many normal everyday cars), just better to drive.

So many assumptions linked in with personal preference, so little time.
I had a BMW 118i M Sport as a hire car for about 2-3 weeks. It was one of the worst new cars i've had the (dis)pleasure of driving. I genuinely wish i'd picked the other option, which was an Audi A3 2.0 TDI Sport. I just wanted to try the Beemer and see what it was like. It didn't take long to regret it.
I've just picked up a 118i as a loaner for the day, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, I was really surprised at how smooth and torquey the engine is, it handles well, nicely built and cruises at 90mph perfectly. I've no idea what you drive but the 118i is perfectly decent, I haven't driven one for years but it's good.
