Just bought a new smoker, and Camden have decided in their wisdom to charge me an extra £61 a year for parking a diesel outside my gaff.

That's PARKING.

Not driving.

Not burning fuel.

Not polluting what is already the most polluted council in London thanks to TFL and delivery drivers.

Why on earth should I pay more money for not operating my car than my neighbour with a hybrid for not operating their car?

Parking permits have to be about space on the road, not about emissions, surely?

Is this insane or is it just me?

Anyone else suffering this?

What can be done?

There's been a diesel surcharge for at least 3 years.

It's clearly not working, so should be higher.

Speak to your Councillor.
Set up a Freedom for Camden Diesel Owners Group (Yay....CamDOG!!)
Mailing lists, posters, emails, badges, maybe get in touch with Cambridge Analytica.

Buy a house with off street parking.

Or leave Camden.

I thought everyone on here had their own private stretch of road leading upto their house?

Well, just the two in Camden. But it's still not as if this is new news.
http://news.camden.gov.uk/changes-to-parking-charg...

It's next-door Islington that was the first, three years ago.
https://www.islington.gov.uk/parking/parking-permi...

So, really, this is "I didn't bother to check the parking rules that apply outside my house before I bought this car. Wah."

Unless this "smoker" is new enough to be Euro6, there's going to be an even more spectacular tantrum when he finds out about the T-charge...

Not helping...

Nothing wrong with diesel provided the car is modern and regularly serviced.

But much more importantly, what is wrong with this picture? The council are just arbitrarily charging for parking. My 1964 classic pumps out more rubbish than this new Volvo, although, to be fair, it pollutes at exactly the same rate when it's parked.

'Just Move', and 'That's Camden for You' is why this mess exists. Is no one challenging the absurdity of this?

I did check. The numbers still make sense thanks to the MPG figures.

It is Euro 6

I checked about the T charge and the ULEZ as well.

I have no objection to paying extra for driving a polluting vehicle through a city.

What I am miffed about is being charged for NOT driving it.

This thread is absurd.

OP reckons his car magically arrives at its parking spot under magical non-polluting power and only pollutes when it's not driving around Camden.

I think Camden want to encourage residents to opt for something that isn't a diesel.

I feel your pain bud. I live in Haringey and my permit is going up a similar value to yours but in this case, I have a pre 2001 petrol so it's determined by engine size. In short, it's a quickfire way for the council to make more money and as we pay council and road tax, this makes it very frustrating. The motorist always get shafted remember.

The reason we had Controlled Parking Zones installed in the area is because people would drive from miles away and park around the area to get close to the two underground stations, two Network Rail stations and London Overground station to get into town. Not to mention the three buses which serve the West End, Waterloo via Islington, and the City. After arriving home when I used to drive to/from work, I'd have to park one or two roads away before 7.30pm as that's when the commuters would collect their cars for home run.

When the council introduced the CPZ and said it would go by engine size/emissions, I responded by asking why this is the case? I stated that I don't leave the engine running when I'm at work (I use public transport now) or overnight either but they just sort of scoffed at me. I also said that the permit prices should be structured depending on vehicle size as did other residents but Haringey didn't listen. Their minds were made up.

Are you guaranteed to park outside your house for that £61, if so at 16p per day its not too bad actually?

How is your diesel vehicle going to get to, and depart from, the parking space?

I think you can only be miffed at the parking charge if you plan to tow it in and out with your Alvis. wink

Well I don't live in Camden or drive a diesel so no, I won't be challenging it. It's possibly something you'd want to consider, though.

Great. So you checked, knew this'd apply, did it anyway, and now you're complaining about it?

Still, if you don't drive it, there's not much point in having it parked there.

That's a tad convoluted for the OP, it seems.

Sadly, no. It's an EXTRA £61 on top of the c.£400 I would pay for a less polluting parked car.

What I was hoping was that I wasn't the only person who thought this way.

If I am, then of course, I'll start a campaign.

I find it fascinating that a pro-car forum like this has so many haters on it.

Would it help if I said that the car was seriously quick?
