So if you’re following a car on the motorway, and their brake lights light up, with nothing ahead of them, do you think “oh, they’re clearly emergency braking”, and act accordingly? Or might they be a few mph over the speed limit, and just adjusting their speed? They don’t slow down significantly until a few seconds after their brake lights illuminate.
What kind of mouth breather uses brakes to drop their speed a few mph on a motorway rather than gently lifting off the throttle? If you see brake lights on a motorway you need to be ready to slow down in a hurry.
Have you been on a motorway recently? People use the brakes all the time to make the most minor speed adjustments.

I'll second that, usually they are not paying attention, either on the phone or fiddling with the satnav or touch screen, they look back and see their speed has crept up and hit the brakes, we see it hundreds of times a day on the M25.

It is bad driving by the Renault. Equally if the DCW had the ability to read the road ahead he would have foreseen what could happen.

If he didn't wait almost 4 seconds after the car ahead started to brake then he wouldn't have ended right up it's arse and the incident and horn honking wouldn't be required.

His hazard perception and reaction time is as bad as the Renault driver.

Nothing ahead of them? What about the roadworks and lane closures?

You're telling me that you wouldn't anticipate the car ahead is going to slow when three lanes merge into one and there is people working on the road?

You still wouldn't anticipate the car ahead slowing where there's a valid reason to slow down and the big red brake lights have also appeared on the back of the car?

How much notice and valid reasons do you require that a car is going to slow?

It's concerning that the DCW couldn't read the situation. It's even more concerning that people have the benefit of watching the video and still can't read the very obvious situation.

The fact that its that generation Renault Megane Scenic, being driven in the middle lane, with the fking fog light on is enough of a flag for me. ste driving is to be expected.

I get the impression the guy knew what was up ahead, and was trying to race up lane 1 to block the MLM.

Absolutely not. It would have been easily doable, but was not done.

Agree, he didn't change speed at all. But that in itself has been the source of other debate already hehe

At least that has answered my question about the type of mouth breathers that do this... I often see brake lights when people are travelling far too closely, but generally not when some random driver has drifted a little above 70. OTOH I see ridiculous levels of unnecessary brake applications on smaller A and B roads every day.

I consider it a personal failure if I have to touch the brakes on the motorway (under normal circumstances).

I drive an automatic and drop a few mph by lifting off not by braking.

Same here, certainly sharp braking (and if you're braking lightly, you may as well just ease off). If I need to slow down in a hurry, my left hand is going straight for that red triangle button.

Don't most cars now turn on the hazards under heavy braking?

Personally I dislike using the brakes on the motorway, purely unnecessary braking is what usually causes the slow downs, one brakes, the next brakes harder, and the next, and the next, then 20 minutes later the motorway has ground to a halt.

Far better off using the handbrake tongue out
