The "Sh*t Driving Caught On Cam" Thread (Vol 4)
Discussion
I have now had my first drive with a dash cam and I have two observations.
1. On the cam things look much further away than they actually are. To me that explains quite a few of the clips where the dcw seemingly over reacts. The chances are that the event was closer than it looks.
2. The mk1 eyeball has a much wider field of view so people getting caught out by vehicle’s emerging from the side probably are not paying as much attention as they should.
I managed a whole 20 mile trip without accelerating at mini roundabouts, or shouting cameruh.

Why was he arrested? It's a zafira, probably caught fire as he was driving which caused him to crash blueg33 said:

Have you been mouthing UR GOIN ON YOOTOOB M8 ! instead, whilst furiously stabbing your finger at the camera?1. On the cam things look much further away than they actually are. Not all dashcams are the same. Many have the fish-eye lens which is something like 180 degrees and of course makes everything look miles away, but others have a much narrower field of view which is significantly better for picking out reg plates. I prefer the narrower ones.

Wide angle has the issue that people viewing the footage will accuse you of driving at 200mph and over reacting to something that was "miles away". Plus as I found out, because the camera can see what is in your A pillar blind spot, people will give you crap for not seeing what the camera could see.Lemming Train said:

Mine is 140 degrees front and rear cams. My eyes still have a wider field of view though, probably because the cam is mounted forward of the driver, human eyes have a 135 horizontal FOV. I've got a 90 degree FOV action cam and everything looks like it's going much faster which could count against you if using as a dashcam but on the flip side it does look like anyone crossing your path is coming out of no where.
Not sure if it's a child or small adult in this clip but I assume the owners of the multiple bikes that were knocked down got some justice.

As I mentioned before, I reckon I can clearly see wider than the dashcam (as viewed on the cams small screen), quite possibly because i swivel my head to maximise vision rather than stare fixedly ahead
He's talking about "how" you see things, rather than your field of view as such.I think his point is that a camera captures everything in its field of view equally, whereas human vision sort of builds up a picture from multiple points and fills in the gaps.

wife asked if I would like a DC for chrimbo. ! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
I got one a year or so ago. Nothing even slightly exciting has happened. I’m disappoint. You need to :
1. Drive over the centre of, or the wrong side of painted roundabouts, especially if you see other cars coming towards you and you'll be turning right then hold down your horn and fumble about trying to press the 'save clip' button on your dashcam.
2. Accelerate onto roundabouts like an F1 driver, especially if you see buses/artics waiting to emerge from the next road, then hold down your horn and fumble about trying to press the 'save clip' button on your dashcam.
3. Find roads where there are long lines of parked vehicles on the other side, wait until there is an oncoming vehicle, then drive straight at them instead of waiting at a convenient gap, mouth "MY RIGHT OF WAY, GO BACK, GO BACK, YOU'RE ON CAMERA MATE!" then hold down your horn and fumble about trying to press the 'save clip' button on your dashcam.
4. Ensure you position yourself in the blind spot of any vehicle joining from a slip road so that you can get some footage of them driving into the side of you, then hold down your horn and fumble about trying to press the 'save clip' button on your dashcam.

You are quite right, following your advice, I’ve now got 34 clips to upload, and a very sore throat. You need to :
1. Drive over the centre of, or the wrong side of painted roundabouts, especially if you see other cars coming towards you and you'll be turning right then hold down your horn and fumble about trying to press the 'save clip' button on your dashcam.
