Of course he could just be a complete throbber and came to a halt in lane 3 just to get out and have a piss, but if I had to bet, I'd say the former is more likely.

In flowing traffic I don't understand how you can end up being unable to get across a few lanes...

If I absolutely had to get out for a slash I'd climb over the barriers and at least stand between them. Whatever happens with an accident as it was that guy's legs (at least) are gone.

You're assuming that the traffic was always flowing. It could have been at a standstill a few minutes earlier and the car conked out and couldn't get it going again.

In that position I would be out of the car like a flash and behind the barrier and move up towards the oncoming traffic. Then any débris from the expected impact would be travlleing away from me. Also oncoming drivers might be made aware of nutter behind barrier and therefore slow down.

According to the press, there was just one fatality - a woman who was stood below the flyover.

Astonishingly, the driver survived.
