I discovered the Kahn videos by chance. They are brilliant; I've watched every one of them. It was probably a couple of years ago that I saw my first car vlogger video; it was "Shmee". He was sitting in a McLaren and said "I really like these switches on the centre console that I've had painted to match the body colour; they are really nice" (or words to that effect). I never watched anymore of his productions after that. He does strike me as a first class end of a bell.
You know that really awkward thing when you are talking about someone and they come into the room behind you? That just happened biggrin

I used to like a lot of the channels described - Schmee, JWW, SOL etc. My biggest problem with some is they have morphed into company marketing men. I think the problem is the money - not that I am suggesting that companies are necessarily paying them directly. The issue is that their videos with the latest / greatest supercars will always get massive views, hence more money. so while they are getting invited to the flashy launch shows, and being given supercars as long term loans to make content with, they are much more reluctant to bite the hand that feeds. I'm not saying they are bad people, or that I wouldn't do the same in their position - Heck even Chris Harris has learned to toe the line for those sexy TG dollars. I'm just saying I'd rather see a reviewer who isn't incentivised to be positive about the products
Interestingly, I am tuning out more and more from the car reviews and getting much more engaged in those telling stories. SoL and his lambo (London bellendery aside) and STG with his Ferrari and now world tour.

One thing I do find incredibly boring (Sorry Tim) is Shmees reviews on these modified cars from the German tuning companies. They are so incredibly dull. Tim, I don't mean to be rude, I am a fan of your other content, especially your own cars... but my heart sinks when the latest upload is another Brabus, Manhart or Novictec monstrosity.

No doubt your viewing figures prove my old man view wrong of course hehe

I also found it far more irritating than I should have that they drive around with the air intakes permanently raised.
I thought this was an oil cooler on automatic operation? Happy to be schooled if it's not the case.

As you say, they should raise and lower depending on the cooling needed. They have fiddled with them to keep them up.
As others have said, there is something quite enjoyable watching his obvious excitement at having his dream car, but I see enough traffic jams in the real world. Now a decent road trip....

I’d have loved to see a road trip with Paul’s Murci and Sam’s 360, but with Drive the World that’s unlikely to happen for a long time.

True. The lambo would need a new clutch before the tunnel.

I struggle to see how SoL is keeping afloat running his Murcielago and paying a mortgage based on his social blade figures, I know he has his clothing business too but it must be tight. Not to mention his views are decreasing massively...

LLF is pulling in more on paper (based on social blade) than SoL and STG redface

It is my understanding that for the larger YouTubers the ad revenue provided by YouTube only ends up making a small portion of their income. You'll get people being paid money just for instagram posts - look at SOL and TGE, they've both recently had clothing deals with the same brand. There'll be some money from that. I suspect he made some decent money back from "the good ol' days" although how much of that is left after buying supercars on finance who can say.

I just hope owning the Lambo doesn't ruin him, historically his "dream lambo" never seems to last long on the channel - both Gallardo and Huracan vanished pretty quick.

SOL is well established with the manufacturers unlike LLF, and as Shmee has explained previously, the ad revenue from videos isn't actually where the majority of their overall revenue comes from, with most coming from sponsorship's and brand deals etc. That difference is significant when you consider LLF is sourcing cars himself, mostly from fans and viewers. SOL is given and paid to drive most of the cars he features on his channel.

Second to that, Social blade is only an estimate and should be taken with a pinch of salt. YouTube awards greater ad revenue value to different channels depending on their quality score/rating. So even though LLF may be getting more views than SOL currently, SOL's views may be generating him more money as his 'authority' and 'quality score' with Youtube is likely to be much higher than LLFs.

Paul/SOL used to do social media for other companies as well as his personal youtubing, so might still have this source of income.

No doubt SoL is more reputable, I should've been more thorough in my previous post. Month on month SoL probably earns more, probably double LLF when you take into account the clothing and other brand deals. What I was trying to say is that from YouTube alone LLF appears to be earning more than SoL in recent months, which in itself is surprising considering subscriber counts and years in the game) - Which was meant to emphasise my point that SoL must be cutting it fine as he lives in London, pays finance on a Murcielago and has declining YouTube stats which can only mean his merch/brand deals will suffer too to an extent.

I think in a few years time, YouTube won't be SoL's full-time gig, he'll still pump out some content but I can only see it going south for him unless something drastically changes.

I don't think SOL actually lives in London. I think he's just outside.

I do feel genuinely bad for Paul. If things go wrong for him YT wise, he does not have the cushion to fall back on that others have.

If it all fails just make a new channel unwrapping toys and let the millions roll in.

I still think the whole occupation of car youtuber sounds like a nightmare.

If you don't mind me asking Jay what do you do to pay the bills? I'm always nosey/interested to know how YT people support themselves while building a channel. Its been suggested to me a number of times that I should do something but I have a face for Radio and would want to punch anyone that wrote negative comments so I think the stress would be too much biggrin

It wouldn't surprise me and this is if it's not already happening you will probably enter an era where media companies are developing people so they arrive packaged up and fully developed from the off. Beefmeisters channel is pretty new and out of the box with some really slick production. He looks like he's been doing it 10 years.

I really hope SOL keeps it going he comes across a good lad but it must be hard to keep thinking of new content as per my comments earlier in the thread. Top gear get a 6 month rest but the pressure on YT folk is to pump out high quality content every 48 hours. STG's world trip thing is about the best thing to come from the old guard in years. I will watch all of that even though his style can sometimes grate. Again comes across a good lad.

YouTube is my main "occupation". To keep me off the poverty line I teach occasionally, do the odd bit of filming still (my old job).

When I started YT I was fairly realistic about the fact that if I wanted it to give me an income I had to dedicate time to it. Two and a half years later it's close to the point where I am not losing masses of money anymore, but neither am I making any of note. It pays my fuel bill at the moment, which is very nice.

The way I have grown my channel has been fairly different to most, it is very varied and it doesn't necessarily grow the numbers as quickly (single brand/model channels do well in that regards, especially ones aimed at younger viewers), but it means I have been very resilient to change and am fortunate to have a fairly mature viewer base.

I have experienced some truly amazing things thanks to YT and am happy for it to continue. As long as it can provide enough for me to not starve, and keep me having fun, that'll make me happy. I think we all know that sometimes getting to drive someone else's supercar is much more fun than the reality of ownership anyway.*

  • This YouTuber will abandon all principles if he can ever afford a Gallardo Superleggera. I'll clickbait the st out of that.
