"someone told me he insured the Senna for what he paid (including the 500k overs) and for another 500k on top of that so he's smiling all the way to the bank on this one and will end up buying a Chiron or something similar when that dust settles."
Maybe that's possible, but I have never heard of an insurance company allowing you to insure your car for more than it's worth. A million dollars over its value? Then burns down 2 weeks later. Lot of red flags there.
Correct

Insurance never covers profit. It covers loss of value. ‘Someone told me’ you mean he made it up.
So what is the value of a Senna? He may have been lucky to get that one for 'only' $500k over list. My cars are insured for an agreed value - the insurance company suggests the value at each renewal but when I suggested that a value had increased above both their suggestion and what I paid they checked and then agreed the higher figure. In this case they will pay out whatever value they agreed unless they can prove fraud. A more interesting question is whether McLaren or the selling dealer will accept liability to the insurance company and if so for how much. I expect McLaren would agree to pay out the list price unless they can prove that the car was modified. That seems unlikely to me. If it had been modified surely Salomondrin would have shared the details on social media. If McLaren were going to be liable for an above list price value it would be much cheaper for them to build him another car.

6 senna's on autotrader, ignoring the one at £9,999,999, they are between £950k and £1.5m.

Seems decent ‘value’ that.

There was another one on Autotrader for £850,000 until a few days ago. It still shows up on a Google search as a blue Senna with 790 miles on it. It had yellow details on it.

Anybody seen the DIY gang channel yet? Guy has bought a totally burnt out hellcat and seems confident that he can get it back in the road.
Bit controversial as some seem to think it is some kind of scam

Ring a stoler. That is the sum total uses for that burnt out car.

We don’t disagree on how insurance can work. My point and I’m sure you agree, the policy holder doesn’t get to dictate a value..500k on top. An insurance policy is a policy designed to put you in the same position before the loss.

As to liability. That’s between the insurer and the manufacturer, if after lengthy investigation, it is shown there is a design fault or a part malfunction. I’m sure Tim wants to know he isnt driving a potential inferno. All these keyboard fantasists. There is a process to follow and I’m sure it will come to light, just what happened. If he wants to sue for ptsd, good luck. He’ll struggle for many reasons. Not to mention, never get an allocation again unless he wants a golf smile

Ex military have been successful and the payouts are modest. Your life has to be fked up. It appears the chap is just fine, if a bit shaken. How will a few 100k help him be ok. And there is zero indication that is on the radar.

It's going to get messy. He'll mostly sue because that's what Americans love to do. His lawyers will claim the car was defective which is why it blew up, they'll claim he has stress for that reason his businesses are suffering in particular his YT channel because it's car based. They'll probably put his loses in the millions. On top of that, his lawyers will probably ask Mclaren to provide extensive information about the Senna to see if Mclaren knew about any design flaws which might have caused the fire and was ignored. And lets not forget the insurance company might launch a separate suit against Mclaren.

He's going in for the kill, he sees an opportunity BUT the question remains if the car was modded or not. Remember he purchased his Senna "used" and trust me Mclaren's legal team will fight vigorously against any claims the car was flawed from the factory hence why this will drag on for a while. Mclaren's reputation is on the line and if the Senna has a serious flaw well that's bad news for them as a brand.

Self confessed heavy weed smoker for many many years gets paranoid and anxiety attacks. Shocker.

Maybe lay off that wacky backy a bit Alejandro. But oh no, you can’t because you’re launching another new tax writeoff, sorry business selling legal weed, which just so happened to be stickered up all over the Senna that went up, giving it massive exposure for people wondering what it was.

There's something odd/dodgy about it all, messing about powdercoating rocker covers on it when it's a rusty burnt chunk of metal is just, well, weird.

Could it not be argued that with the extra income he'll be getting from YouTube with all the Senna drama that he'd be no worse off, if not slightly better?

Obviously he'll be the cost of the Senna down, but insurance will more than likely cover that.
