I thought our comrade was suggesting the GT4 wasn't any good, and the reviewers were wrong?

Very interesting comments here about the perception given by car manufacturers via the general media and Youtubers or "influencers" as some wish to known, about their cars and how they are reviewed. I've just finished listening to the "Collecting Cars Podcast" featuring Chris Harris and Dickie Meaden and they cover this subject and more. I recommend a listen by any car enthusiast. Very insightful and enjoyable listening.
Thanks I will give it a listen.

I personally do get more out of a YouTuber who talks about what it's like to own the car, rather than how well a car goes sideways or round a track. I never understood why a car reviewer would spend 5mins talking about how much fun the car is to drift, as if I'm going to be doing that every day on the M4.

Yep totally agree with this. I can't think of a vlogger who's opinion on dynamics I would take any note of. There's only really Catchpole who will criticise but he does it in such a nice way he's the only one that manages to give objective information that might not all be positive and still gets press invites.

The whole car media system is broken and as I've previously commented on here we are now in a world where a lot id the vloggers/jurnos have never actually driven a proper car with no or hydraulic steering/none servo brakes etc. None of them really demonstrate any car control skills and few get the cars for anything other than a snatched half hour.

Some of the cars that get hyped up are really not that good but will have had the likes of Chris Harris bursting a blood vessel about how great they are. When I first drove a Cayman R and later a GT4 that's when the penny dropped for me that 99% off reviews are just sticking up to the manufacturers. 2 examples there of cars that are "OK" but yet both enjoy god like status despite being a bit meh really.

The media is good for showing us how shiny things are but is also enabling manufacturers to get away with producing ever more boring cars.

You're welcome. It was refreshing listening to the Podcast and finally getting some sense of all the craziness happening in the world of cars at the moment. Some of it is that manufacturers are in control of what gets put out there for the most part and consumers are suckered into it and not getting the real information they need to make an informed decision about their likely purchase. Chris reckons that in the near future, the tide would change with someone in the media finally challenging manufacturers and basically calling a spade a spade. He briefly mentions the Youtuber Salmondrin and his recent battles with MacLean as an example.

How much of this stuff do you actually sell? A hundred pairs? A thousand? I just really, really don’t get it tbh.

I listened to the Chris Harris podcast and found it very interesting. Out of all the big channels I'd say Matt on Carwow is the most honest, he doesn't say every car is great and yet still gets all the cars they need.

Granted they have a different audience to the usual vlog/suoercar channels but the reviews are always balanced and he isn't afraid to say you should buy something else instead because it's genuinely better.

Doug is quite balanced too but then he doesn't have to worry about what the press departments think of him just to get the next car.

The fact Queen B and myself both have R8s at the same time is basically coincidence. I have been trying to get one from Audi for a long time, and was promised one last year but they got taken off the fleet when they got face lifted. Then when the new one came out all the big outlets got them first - big YTers, press etc...

I asked a while ago to have one this week, and Queen B's got herself one as a long term loan (lucky girl!)

I have been lucky to build a good relationship with Audi and have been doing quite a bit with their heritage fleet, which I enjoy probably more than the modern stuff. Also, anyone who thinks that being given a free supercar for a week will only ever say nice things should definitely watch my R8 review. I have been critical of some parts of Audi products before and they have never complained or refused to give me a car. I can't say the same for other manufacturers.

You misunderstood me. My point was not that the GT4 is good, but that as he said all reviewers agreed that it is good. As it happens, I also found a comfort specced one to be a great road car. Hence my genuine question about what he looks for in a road car. I know some would go have preferred it with less grip, others with a higher second gear. Personally in spite of being quite a keen driver if I could have made changes I would have added parking sensors and better infotainment. Just shows we are all different.

You're pretty much on your own with that though.

Still enjoying Samcrac mending stuff on the cheap although the ads are super annoying.

On that subject, does anyone else think that Youtube is showing more ads than it used to? I watched the MCM Germany road trip video and there must have been 4 mid video adverts, and Shmee's Ford GT in New York video was the same.

Or is it just because people are making longer videos these days (30mins+)?

You hit a button on YT which will automatically insert mid roll ads - longer videos will get more. I personally only do pre and post ads, as I hate watching mid rolls myself

After over a decade of watching YouTube videos I installed an AdBlocker yesterday, it's gone wayyyy too far now. Admittedly some worse than others, for those I like and don't take the piss I'll turn it off temporarily, if I remember hehe
