The old print media and terrestrial tv is dead. The youtubers have found a better way to engage with their audience that's what pees of Harris/Nidell etc I agree totally with Tim the old guys have failed to grasp it. The younger digital native generation have really got it and seem to be born to know how to harness its power. The automotive sector is a minnow compared to how younger people are earning from fashion/makeup/kids entertainment.
My daughters, (3 & 10) can watch someone make 'slime' (like play doh) , or someone review new children's toys, or kids play with Peppa Pig figures / dollies, and the amount of subscribers is a lot... so if an 8 year old can churn out content to a large US audience, you can see how some of the old skool presenters may resent their 'success" rolleyes

I do enjoy the CarWow videos, no matter what the car, due to the way Matt presents it. Someimes there's head to head races, some times he will link up with Yiannimize when racing, er testing a Lamborghini.

As for his older videos, I find them useful for reference, especially if am looking for an older SUV.
Matt should have been a TG presenter, he’s funny, a good presenter and knowledgeable, 3 things the 2 new muppets are not

Are you guys following the insane drama with DDE and Edmon (same guy who shipped his Murci to Europe)?

I wasn't there when st went down but my friend was down there with his buddy who owns the Reventon. Supposedly Edmon got pissed off that Reventon stole the show so he decided to do a burnout in the middle of the intersection. To cut the story short he claims DDE showed the cops the footage which resulted in Edmond getting his car impounded and thrown in jail for a night. The next night Carmel PD shut down the street which pissed off a lot people who wanted to see nice cars driving around.

If that wasn't enough drama, someone posted a criminal complaint from 2009 about DDE hitting his GF in Vegas but he was never charged. People claimed it was his wife but he made a video of him in tears saying it was a ex-gf and how is wife and daughter are been attacked. Houston Crosta who's Edmonds friend and a former DDE friend decides to upload his own video claiming he had nothing to do with the post but called DDE a cry baby and said DDE attacked his family first.

It's unbelievable these guys can't keep it civil. I know at Quail this year they did everything in their power to keep spotters out of the event and also kept them away from the parking lots. Now I'm hearing next year the city council and local PD is looking to close roads in Carmel to prevent idiots like Edmon from doing stupid burn outs. It only takes one idiot to ruin events like this.

I still want to know why the shmee crew have taken it on themselves to make it all about them?

Suddenly when that question has been asked it all goes quiet

Why do we keep talking about Chris Harris? He's lucky enough to inherit TG which probably saved his mediocre career as a car journalist. Before TG his only claim to fame was how he pissed off Ferrari.

He was the most famous car journalist outside of top gear long before he got the top gear job to be fair.

He "was" famous but the days of your typical car journalist is dead and Chris Harris needs to come to terms with that. The younger generation doesn't care for automotive magazines, review shows and I don't even think they care much about automotive news sites. Nowadays it's all about social media personalities and what supercar they're buying next.

There's a reason why someone like SOL will get a brand new R8 to drive around for 6 months or get a SVJ to drive around for a few day whilst your typicial car journalist will be lucky to get say a SVJ for a few hours. It's because car manufacturers don't care about an in-depth review, they just want their car out there on social media to project a certain image and lifestyle.

Any chance you just might be an influenza? Or have a ridiculous hard on for one?

I suggest the “reason” is that the marketing dept are lazy a st and having a few pet 20 somethings on a tight leash gushing about their product is preferable to someone independent saying actually it’s a bit st.

Especially when that someone can drive to a higher standard and has the technical understanding of the product over a person that can # pictures of their dinner with a cool filter.

Do you think Harris had watched the drivel outlined above, and made his comments about YouTubers in general.
Nothing I've read about the 'insane drama' above would make me watch it, hit a 'like' or subscribe.

It's worse than that, I suspect that these days the most important 'influencer' community that mainstream manufacturers want to work with are not car themed people at all, it is the family or lifestyle people so they can get their products seen by non enthusiasts who make up 99% of the car buying public.

Exactly. It should be translated to say

"Car manufacturers have realised most people are mugs and will just want the next shiny thing cos some bloke on YouTube said it was good while selling you a watch"

There is a world for both influencer and reviewer. For people that don't care how a car drives (honestly) you have the influencer, for people who want to know how a car drives, you have the reviewer.

Harris has no issue with that, he just sees the blaring of one into the other as damaging the review process. And he has a point.

Seen Through Glass said on Harris podcast that these ‘influencers’ are being paid to go to these car launches. Talk about being gagged before you leave the tarmac! Who is going to say a single negative or even objective thing in that instance?

ANYTHING these guys make a video on is the best thing in the world. It’s just fking stupid. For the 14 year olds watching and actually believing it’s real life, I guess they can dream, but it’s just everywhere at the moment. Utter vapid nonsense on every single car related video on the internet pretty much.

What I have come to realise is that most journalists and big car youtubers are all self entitled w*nkers.

I mean at the end of the day their careers revolve around critiquing bits of metal that in the grand scheme of things mean f*ck all to most people.

Most have no real skill or qualifications yet portray themselves as brain surgeons.

I like my cars so generally have enough knowledge myself to make my own mind up on which car I buy/drive. I cant say anyone mentioned in this thread has had any influence on my car buying.

You could say that the whole "everyone doing the same" isn't radically different to the situation 15 years ago when mainstream press was king. Six different magazines might turn up to the same do at the same roads, and cover the same cars at the same time - it's just that back then you probably only ever read one or maybe two. I guess it's up to us if we choose to watch four different YouTubers reviews of the same thing.

FWIW I have never been paid anything beyond my expenses to go to a launch- although I have heard of influencers being paid for them, and it is up to them to disclose that as the moment you receive a financial incentive you're an advert not a journalist
