We all know / knew posting links to our own videos isn’t / wasn’t allowed. It’s as simple as that.

Read the posts again more carefully.

It's now NOT ALLOWED to post links to videos that you DO NOT OWN. So now you can't post your own videos or other peoples videos.

It's as simple as that.

One comment on this from me, it all refers to distribution of the content, which in online terms usually means downloading and re-uploading - so if you took an image and uploaded it in this thread that you didn't own.

YouTube's T&Cs section refers to exactly this, not the use of the direct URL to hotlink back to the content.

Hi Tim - would be great to see you explore the engine in the Supra vs other BMWs the B58 sits in, i.e the 440i, 240i & Z4 - it seems to sit in various states of tune for touring / hatch / sports models, with different exhaust notes and setups.
mehmehmeh said:
As for Tim Schmee you should do yourself a favor and cancel the Z4 and buy a low mileage, manual, Mk4 supra TT with some sensible modifications. Great cars.
I'm just going to quote this because it's completely apt in this situation:

RobDown said:
It's the same old rule of thumb - what we like on PH is not what the 'audience' likes (and vice versa). cf Tim's Mille Miglia video which we all loved but the audience didn't take to

The best thing for Tim to do is to ask us what we'd like to see in upcoming videos and then scratch those ideas biggrin
Unfortunately in the cases of both the comparison of BMW engines, and an old Supra over a new one; neither would be particularly YouTube appropriate pieces of content. There is a home for that kind of video, but it isn't on my channel or really on YouTube as a platform because they would both be much more niche and have smaller potential audiences.

PistonHeads new terms say that you as the poster grant PistonHeads a license to use the content however they see fit in any medium in perpetuity.

YouTube don't grant users the right to license content posted to Youtube to others, they only give permission to watch, distribute and share content.
So yes, YouTube say it's fine to link videos but not license them to others, but by linking videos on Pistonheads you're granting a license that you're not entitled to grant.

A URL to a page on YouTube is not ownership of the content.

You might want to read the other thread and familiarise yourself with the new terms.

I agree with you. But I think PH sees it differently.

So let me get this straight - Beefy isn’t allowed to post his own video or even mention the fact that he has a new one out but he can email a trusted PH’er with a link and comment (the same comment that he might have posted himself) and that person just copies and pastes from the email into a new post and that’s OK?

Give me strength rolleyes This place makes you laugh sometimes.
I did not email ashleyman. I did speak with Steve after the posts were removed (and i'll admit i did suggest he repost, but he said no).

So let's not go around making accusations please.
Mate, I wasn’t making accusations - I was just pointing out how easy it would be to circumvent the no linking rule and that if it was done that way, the PH would be absolutely fine with it.

Not suggesting for a second that is what you did - that never occurred to me beer

Just trying to highlight the ridiculousness of the situation smile

I'm not sure PH has a legal leg to stand on, a 3rd party sharing a link does not make them or anybody else the owner of that web page (including URL, logo, font, graphics, and all content on the page in addition to the video itself).

If it worked that way, then Facebook, Twitter et-al would be very much more complicated places than they already are.

Is the result of this that you basically cannot share a link to anything anywhere? If that page you link to has a logo on it or anything like that then it's not something you can give the copyright to.

Have any links been deleted, other than those that relate to self promotion?

The situation about posting links is outlined in our Rule of Posting No.12e that states the following:-

"Do not create threads/posts about your own personal websites, blogs, social media channels or video hosting sites such as YouTube. This will be deemed as advertising and/or endeavouring to drive traffic to external sites from PistonHeads."

Hope that clarifies.

It wasn't my YouTube channel/video that I linked to in my post that was deleted, but point noted.

Yes. The original post by S11Steve linking to a video that was NOT his.

They don’t. But YouTube grant you permission to do certain things and PistonHeads expects you to be in a position to grant a specific license. The 2 don’t work together and even though Big Al. has commented the issue isn’t with the rules. It’s with the terms and conditions of the site.

It’s moot arguing. Fact is. Someone posted a link to a YouTube video that did not break rules but didn’t conform to T&C and it was removed.

When the rules get tweaked again there will be a caveat in that rule that includes "other members or mates clips" smile

Aww, that's a shame. There's a fair few valid contributors to this thread that will be affected should that caveat be introduced....
