Why all the sudden hate for diesels?

People have short memories, weren't we recently encourage to buy them as they were quieter, cleaner and more economical?

Remember this advert?

There's a difference between a political position and a car company trying to sell you something....

But it was quite true, the new diesels from then were/are smooth, quiet and flexible like a petrol motor... I have an 169k mile 03 Octavia and its just delightful. The hotter it gets the better it runs.

I was hoping a diesel debate would come up today. Not had one for hours...

If it helps I've never liked them in cars.

I can't decide whether you are being sarcastic or not, have you missed all the news since the VW scandal began? And never seen the details around particulates and impact on health? Avoid the ones saying they cause c40k deaths though as they are a bit tin foil hat.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm pretty sure every single poster on this thread will agree with each other...

You'll need to wait until tomorrow for a proper debate, maybe then we can get a definitive answer.

Not being sarcastic, but I don't think the VW thing was really as bad as it was made out to be.

At the time of that advert, diesels were becoming better that they were, but people have short memories.

The issue with diesel is that more recent studies exposed that the nature of diesel emissions where worse than we thought previously, add on to that some sensationalist headline grabbing figures of dubious quality and public and political opinion was swayed placing them out of favour.

For fleet/company cars they were taxed so as to be the preference and now that has turned to be taxed out of existence.

I'm not a fan of diesels. Not the noise, and especially not the clouds of soot. I was following a 2006 Audi A6 yesterday and every time he put his foot down there were clouds of black soot coming from his exhaust.

I have had a few diesels, but would almost always prefer the petrol model. When I had an E220 cdi on lease it was only because they couldn't find an E200 cgi petrol anywhere in the UK at the time.

Particulates (DPF's have helped reduce these, Direct Injection Petrol particulates is why GPF's are also being utilised more now as well), but NOx is a major issue still.

I can appreciate that, but isn't it the case that the latest news is 'always the most correct' and believed (if the above comments are anything to go by?). Won't there be a new syudy later to say that diesels, especially modern ones are in fact the cleanest and best?

Just because the taxes are higher doesn't mean that diesels are bad.. That was my original point.

I don't think i've ever been in a smooth rattle free diesel, they all have a gruffness to them and when standing outside they rattle and have a distinctive smell. The biggest problem is people bought them for all the wrong reasons. I won't be sad to see them go.

If you are concerned about the level of plant food emissions, and are willing to ignore all of the other noxious st that diesels spew out, diesels compare well against petrols.

If you are measuring all the different types of noxious st coming out of the exhaust (the carcinogens etc), diesels don't compare quite so well, especially outside of the warranty period when your typical miserly diesel owner guts the DPF instead of repairing it properly, bypasses the EGR etc.

The problem is that politicians embarked on a war on plant food. They incentivised diesel. It shifted a lot of cars. Now somebody has actually bothered to take a scientific view.

I was a petrol fan always until I borrowed an Octavia tdi. The torque, smoothness, flexibility in slow traffic, excellent drive on twisty roads and 65mpg, made me a believer in the diesel for a commuter and tourer. As a motorist, what's not to like?

Err I think VW might have a different view on that now.
