EP3 v mk7 Fiesta ST, comparable on B roads?

Not a Fiesta ST but here’s a short video of my friends mk 3 Focus ST that’s modified to 280 bhp with Mk3 RS Brembo’s chasing me at Oulton Park including a dollop of oversteer on the exit of lodge corner. EP3’s with a few choice modifications are definitely comparable to modern hot hatches in terms of performance.

If you want to carry on arguing you'll have to pay for another 5 minutes.

I'm not convinced i've had my money's worth so far wink

Are you actually capable of holding a conversation on here without the red mist descending? I'll certainly be happy to pay for 5 minutes worth of that.

I'm still hoping someone will know exactly what was changed to improve steering and handling from pre to post face lift....

I've asked in lots of places but nobody seems to know for sure!

Apparently there were over 1500 changes to the car. The following stolen from here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Civic_Type_R#2...

"2004 saw this successful CTR updated with many improvements – revised EPS with quicker steering, revised suspension settings, projector headlamps (JDM came equipped with halogens only while the EDM came with an option for HIDs with self-levelling motors), lighter clutch and flywheel assembly etc.; based on Honda literature, this facelifted (FL) model was targeted at addressing customers' and critics' feedback such as understeer on the limit (due to the front MacPherson strut setup), numb steering response and lack of low end torque."

This is an interestingly topical subject for me.

Being a Honda fan, I’d fancied an EP3 for a while, and in 2016, I bought one.  Travelled from the west coast of Scotland to Birmingham; I’d looked at a few, and this seemed a good ‘un.

Test drove it, and done the deal. Driving back up the road to Scotland, I discover the synchros were on the way out.

That was the first banghead moment.

I’d paid a bit over the odds for it, so when I found out how much it cost to repair the synchros – second banghead moment.

The car is/was a weekend toy for me, so for various reasons, I didn’t bother selling it, and just drove it occasionally – my heart wasn’t in it tho.

Fast forward to a week ago when I absentmindedly left the handbrake off and it gently rolled into my neighbour’s car.  Nary a scratch on his, but a lovely dent on my OSF wing banghead

One facelift EP3, free to a good home!

(I’m only half joking – I’m dreading the f*cking idiots I’m going to have to put up with when selling it)
Out of interest, what was the mileage of the ep3 when your purchased it, and did you not allow the gearbox to get warm on the test drive and test the gears through the revs, apologies if you feel I'm questioning you, sometimes location males testing a car like the ep3 difficult

Mileage was 96k when I test drove it.

Engine and gearbox were warmed up when I tested it, and the seller gave me ample opportunity to drive – offering multiple runs etc.

The only thing I didn’t do was fast changes at high revs – which is where the issue manifests itself and becomes apparent.

My old FN2 could sometimes be reluctant to go into gear when attempting very fast changes at high revs, my ITR on the other hand didn't seem to be a problem. My Puma was unbeatable for this and made up somewhat for its lack of power.

Bought a 53 plate, my first brand new car. Kept it for about 6 years & 60k miles. It was great fun but I only used the back seats twice in that time. But the engine was great. Traded it in for an S2000, which is probably what I should have bought in the first place. Test drove one a year after I bought the Type-R and realised I had made a mistake. Stuck with it but eventually the call of the S2k was too strong. Have now had that for 10 years/118k and still love the VTEC-yo. Can't part with her. Renovation in progress smile

A car that I've never really got the hype about to be honest.

Can't help but think it was launched at the wrong time as, a couple of years later, the likes of the MK5 Golf GTI came along. While I love a normally aspirated car, the Golf (and subsequent turbocharged hatches) have showed just how much better they are in the real world. Being able to rev to 8000rpm is all well and good but, on a miserable commute to work, mid-range grunt and a bit of comfort go a long, long way. In a daily driver, the exciting engine just doesn't make up for all of the flaws. I've always lusted after the EK9, but this just felt a bit too compromised and immediately out-of-date to me.

That leaves it in the realms of weekend car/track toy and, in this budget, I just couldn't have one over a Renault Sport Clio.
You have to accept what it is, drive with a different mindset and go from there. I had mine when the MK4 GTI was still the alternative and aside from the real or perceived quality, night and day for anyone who cares. Even when replacing it & looking at the Mk5 Golf, amongst others, I still think I would have been happier with a healthy Honda. Maybe I'm in a fairly small minority of people who can't quite see the attraction of that VW. I know it is good in many ways, but not for me, at the price it was at the time.
