Its York, not Detriot.
Even the bad bits aren't that bad. Some parts of Acomb, Dringhouses and Foxwood are worse than others. Other parts of them are much better than others. Tanghall is pretty much full of students and little else.
Alot will depend on how easy access you want to the A64. The North of the City will mean spending a lot of time on the outer (northern) ring road (A1237), which can be very busy at times. Although there is supposed to be a plan to turn it into dual carriage way. Maybe.

Holgate nice. Heworth nice as long as it is actually Heworth and not Tang Hall.Bootham nice but expensive.
As said above, York's worst areas are nicer than many other places best.

As people have said, there are no really bad areas.However, bits of Heworth and Clifton are a reasonable distance from the city centre (30mins plus walk). Realistically Acomb is a bus/cycle ride from the CC - you'll be going through Holgate on your way. Bootham is nice but traffic can be a pain.
As with any city, as you get closer to the centre in you'll find that some things like gardens and off-street parking can be harder to come by. If those are important to you then looking further out will help.
The classic areas to avoid were Tang Hall, Foxwood, parts of Acomb and parts of Clifton.
As others have said though, even the bad parts of York are pretty good.
I've lived here for the last 20 years having moved up from the south and have no plans to leave.
So far I've lived in:
Heslington Road and Lawrence Street - some lovely properties, very student heavy, about 30 minutes to the station, traffic reasonable.
Heworth - nice, reasonable amenities, half hour walk to town, make sure you don't cross the border to Tang Hall
Osbaldwick - a village subsumed by York. Still has some of its own character, but a little far out.
Tang Hall - not that bad, but not great. My neighbours were the biggest problem.
Town Centre - lovely... If you can find the right place. The area around Aldwark is pretty quiet and yet 5 minutes from the town centre. Best location I've lived in by far.
Clifton - somewhere between Tang Hall and Heworth. A little rough around the edges but reasonable amenities. The closer you get to Bootham, the nicer it gets...but the heavier the traffic!

This is exactly what I was going to say. Heworth and Holgate are your ideal ones. Also look around Bishopthorpe Road, depending on your budget.Bootham nice but expensive.

If you're a driver, of course you are you're asking on here, I'd look at the outlying villages rather than in the centre. Parking can be an issue and traffic at rush hour is awful.
I lived in Holgate and had a drive and garage, which wasn't too bad. Since then I've lived in three different villages around York and much prefer it. The only bad thing is not being able to walk into town and back on an evening.

I like the idea of a village but I like the idea of being ablt to go places without getting in the car more.
