Polestar Engineered performance packages launched
As Volvo moves to electrification, so will the Polestar options - starting with a 415hp S60
We haven't yet seen the new S60 saloon, but that hasn't stopped Volvo already announcing a new range of 'Polestar Engineered' upgrades for its compact executive challenger. Uniquely available for the flagship T8 model, and set to be offered for the V60 and XC60 in 2019, the package features powertrain, brake, wheel and suspension upgrades.
You'll have to use your imagination a little to picture the S60 PE, what with the car not officially unveiled for another week, although the raft of tweaks forthcoming sound very interesting. As with recent fast Volvos, the S60 T8 will receive Ohlins dampers - in this case the very fancy DFV items - using a design that's shared with the Polestar 1. In addition, Brembo brake calipers are now fitted, the pads are upgraded and the wheels are lighter.
In terms of power, Volvo is claiming that an S60 T8 Twin Engine Polestar Engineered will produce 415hp and 494lb ft, up from 400hp and 472 as standard. However that's a quoted US figure, so don't be surprised to see a European version boast a few more horsepower. A tweak to the gearbox software should make it more responsive, too.
Extra changes are largely cosmetic, the Polestar Engineered car identified by a few gold highlights (that now the Polestar hallmark colour) inside and out, plus black chrome exhaust pipes.
It seems slightly bonkers that a 415hp Volvo saloon is now classed as nothing more than a performance pack, but such is the way of the hybrid world. The S60 is described by its makers as a "responsive and exciting driver's car", which has to be good news for those considering a Mercedes-AMG C43, Audi S4 or similar. Following a reveal of the regular S60 next week, expect the Polestar Engineered option to be available by the end of the year.
As said though the polestar engineered bits on the calipers look cheap.
I also think this just makes the whole situation regarding "Polestar" being an entirely separate entity from Volvo even more complex (although the Polestar 1 looks amazing!)
