That nose looks like it was done by the same chap who did the rear of the current Type R Civic. It's hideous.

Love my current Audi S1 which is my daily hack. Only thing I don’t like is the very limited space in the rear and boot which the new car should address.

Hopefully it will look better in the flesh compared with those pics.
Why didn't you just buy a A3 instead then?

This is the problem with cars now. If you wanted a `small` hatchback, the A1 was a fine car. But every generation of A1 will get bigger, as some people buy a small car and want it bigger. So as the car grows, it ain't small anymore. Mini being the best case in point.

Why not just buy a bigger car if you want more space, and why can't manufacturers leave car sizes the way they are. People bought them as they wanted that size of car.

I'm liking the exterior shape of the new A1. Not so keen on the interior though.

The S1?
Lack of 3 door is disappointing, and would put me off buying one.
Lack of manual, will definitely put me off buying one.
Current S1 (to my spec) is just over £32K. So this new one will be no doubt be around £35K. That's a lot for a `small` hatchback.
Any future RS1 will be over £40k

The new Fiesta ST is looking more likely as my next new run-a-round as each day passes. 3 door, manual, and being lighter than the S1, it should be close on pace to it. And once the Mountune kits come along ...........

Really disappointed

Those pics have really put me off. For such a small car the front end is too bulky for the body, not good. Of course my first impression were the ‘Ford’ alloys (what are they called ‘Snowflakes’ or something?).

Needs to be 3 door too.

No longer on my shopping list, will stick with my MK7 Golf R and my MK1 TT 240 QS.

Pity !!

What happened to the so-called RS1 that was supposed to be coming out??

New! Improved! Bigger!

Until the biggest model becomes huge, nobody buys it, it is discontinued and a new, improved, smaller car is introduced at the bottom.

Maybe I'm in a minority but I like the looks of the new A1 & think the triple bonnet vents will work on the S1 better than the run of the mill models. I think it's has an Intergrale & quattro Sport style going on - I'd like to see turbine wheels like the A1 quattro in red or white.

The shame is that the S1 will be S-Tronic only I assume.

I've always wondered why manufacturers made 3 door models which sell in very low volumes (you rarely see a 3 door Golf or Focus unless they are a performance model), as surely the simplified design & manufacture processes plus parts stock etc would reduce the costs & counteract the extra expense of the extra work involved in a 5 door car.

At the time I bought the S1, the size suited. But my son is getting taller (like they do) and so he is starting to get a bit cramped in the back.

I don't necessarily see increasing size of models to be an issue, as long as somewhere down the line they slot a new model in underneath. For example the VW Up slotting below the VW Polo.

An S3 or RS3 is an option to replace my S1, although I might see how large the new A1/S1 turns out first.

And I'm in the camp that prefers the 5 door Sportback A1/S1. I think the roof-line looks better than on the 3 door version. Same with the A3/S3.

Don't mind the front, looks rather aggressive which I like. I'm definitely in the camp of thinking it's a shame to lose the 3 door though... really running out of options now! Am I right in thinking the 208 GTi is now out of production? That leaves only the Golf GTI/R and Fiesta ST doesn't it?

You could always buy an S3, non, or a Transit?
Unless they're going to have an A0 the A1 should always be cramped in the back - it's supposed to be their smallest car FFS.

Too late now, but imho they should have kept this:
  • small
  • cramped in the back but fine for the occasional passenger
  • keep the 3 door option
And resurrect the A2 (make it 4 door only) which should have more room in the back than the A1, make an S2 that still won't tread on the toes of the A3 / S3.

All the car makers are creating niches to fill so I don't know why they're bdising the A1 to make it what an A2 should be...

In 3 years time they'll be wanting a new small car and their naming strategy will be up the spout.
