Best smoker barges 1-5 large [Vol 13]
Discussion
Depends on how bad it is, and what it's done to the rest of the system. You might have pump wear, partially blocked pipes giving a pressure drop to the rack, stuff like that. If it's picked up water contamination (which it shouldn;t, but 20 years is a long time for anything so who knows what lies in its past?
Over time the fluid becomes contaminated with metal and polymer particles from elsewhere in the system and those particles wear the pump faster. Nothing lasts forever and it's one of those things, like changing the transmission fluid, that manufacturers drop from the service schedule because they only care about things being reliable within the factory extended warranty period.

Got to be the best all-things-considered car ever built? I know there's an argument for W124. And it's a strong one. But...
Tough one innit. I appreciated all the classy qualities of my W124 and genuinely liked the car a lot, but never really took to the way it drove. A little too wooden in ride, a little too much wind noise, and the aforementioned pull towards the camber of the road that no amount of alignment could cure, and was eventually put down to TADTS. This on a mint, one owner 50k miler.Personally I’d err towards E39 whilst noting the 10+ years advantage in development, in the end appreciating that it’s probably too close to call.

Is it specific PAS fluid on the E39 or ATF?
ATF.W124 vs E39: it's the comparison of two completely different generations of car. The BMW to compare with the W124 is the E34.
I'd probably take a W124 of that generation over an E34, but when you compare the E39 with its true contemporary, the W210, then for me it's the E39 every time.

Mine too. Despite being relative bangers, none of mine had any shimmy or shake or left/right pull, and felt surprisingly long-legged on the motorway.

It depends on what the "all-round" capabilities you want are to be honest. One could argue, and rightly so, that the new 5 series absolutely blows the E39 into a clocked hat. Yes, it's more complex, yes, it'll cost more to fix to people buying a 20 year old example instead of a brand new one..... But the new one is more refined, with decent set up it's as comfortable (having been in one I don't feel an E39 is better), it's got more creature comforts, the seats are better, it's more roomy it's more economical AND has better performance like-for-like models.....Got to be the best all-things-considered car ever built? I love the E39, I really really do, but some cars have surpassed it for sure. The differences are that today, the newer cars aren't "out and out clear favourites" whereas the E39 was clearly ahead of the curve.
Money no object, would I take a brand new E39 530i or 540i over a brand new 5 series (G something or other) 540i or 550i? Not a chance. Money no object being the crux.

Righto, it is what it is then, thanks. No question that on the motorway it is fine, and it doesn't pull one way or another but I suppose having a 140 for three years has left me slightly detached, in a good way.
Your 140 probably has parameter steering; my 210 has it. It is very light at low speed around the straight ahead, getting into any of the other cars after the 210 my first though always is whether the power steering is knackered.High speed stability was another reason for a big steering wheel; as was the risk of PS failure.
Yes, good point. My 210 had it too. It's very good
Just had the call and it's good news on the Touring, or at least not bad news. It will require front pads soon, rear pads and discs also, slight oil weep from the engine but nothing serious, he's changed the bulbs so sorted there and one tyre is pretty much shot.
He ran out of time for the air conditioning so it's booked in next week for 'just a re-gas' and see how long that lasts. Also the remaining service parts for the CL are in. Barge-tastic.
Edit - The garage called again and will have time to gas the air conditioning with the dye stuff to isolate the very likely leak I suspect it will have.

The highest compliment I can pay to the e39 in peak guise (M5, natch), is that I could win the euromillions and I'd still have one in the garage.
The flip side to that is that I could do with a lottery win to run one but that's another story...
Absolutely! First reaction to that was that if I won the Euromillions proper, rather than a mere million or so, then mine might be a one-off E39 M5 Touring. And then I thought if I had that much money I'd have space for a Harry-style barn full of cars, and as I already have a old Touring which I'm very fond of, maybe just have a lovely saloon M5 as well. The flip side to that is that I could do with a lottery win to run one but that's another story...

I think that car could fetch quite a bit more. Mine raised £3,500. It was a 4 cylinder without leather and would have benefitted from a suspension and steering overhaul. The bodywork was perfect though.https://www.gumtree.com/p/mercedes-benz/mercedes-w...
