There's a chance we could perhaps have an interesting PM conversation, depending on where in the country you are/it is.
I spoke to him yesterday and another mutual friend has snapped it up already - he got £2500 for it I think, which seems quite a bit, but it was in very good shape.

I fancy a £1k random barge, having missed out on a Saab 9000. Suggestions welcome!

I don’t need one, but have not purchased anything for a while... otherwise it might be a hospital beige 205.
How about a 530d m-sport touring with the wrong wheels and not inter-galactic mileage?

Or alternatively, for comedy value you could buy the ugliest car ever designed. Ever.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend! - it's my car so didn't want to post and break the rules. But as you've asked.......

I'd have thought a grand would bag that the weekend before Christmas.

These are really brilliant cars. Apart from the rust. Everything else about them is first rate. Were it not for the chronic propensity to rust, these cars would be the barge of barges. They are refined, elegant, great to drive, comfortable, spacious. The interior architecture is very nice indeed. Last night in pretty horrid conditions I hustled mine from Monkseaton to Mitford, 21 miles, in 17 minutes. Whoever it is that wants a £1,000 barge will not go wrong with that car.

Ah right, OK, thanks, probably more than I would have wanted to spend on it anyway.

This looks alright. Slightly sporting manual barge. Year’s MOT too.

I like that but the history does say it’s currently on its second MOT failure!

I had two S210s and loved them both, but driving one recently back-to-back with my S211 showed up how much things moved on in a decade. And they still hold the All-Comers record for competitive rusting.

Given that you can get a good 211 for only a few quid more nowadays (mine is probably worth no more than £2k, and that's a 2006), that's where my cash would go. If the 210s didn't rust, then my opinion might differ but sadly, they do; I've not seen one in recent years that hasn't been affected, though I accept there must be some.

I feel like I should sing the praises of a V70/850 T5 as a £1k barge too. Comfortable, very practical and full of nice details, I did 250 miles in it yesterday and it's just fantastic for sitting at decent motorway speeds. Then pull off the motorway and enjoy that engine note and that boost to make a genuinely quick car. It doesn't handle and it'll get 28mpg on the motorway (over 30 is possible if trying, but it ruins the experience really), but I think mine's a keeper.

I may need to grab a large emergency estate this side of Xmas. I was looking at this but the MOT history suggests some electronic faults, which may have simply been cleared and may therefore recur, so that's put me off:

Following the T5 comment above, I'm now looking at those too.

What are the weak spots to look out for?

Manual, which avoids the grenade autobox (the most difficult one to check). The clutches are quite heavy (relatively speaking) even when in top fettle on manual cars, don't expect that modern feel-less clutch pedal.

Check all the toys, the dash unit can fail so make sure it works correctly. Listen for suspension faults as they're heavy cars.

Otherwise the engines etc are all very good - the 2.4 is a reliable if unspectacular unit, for some gentle barging it's fine. The D5 is better as a long-term prospect, but I wouldn't miss having a diesel.

It's not £1k or a barge, but it'd be a lovely car to enjoy.

I can imagine that being a great thing to snoofle about in for spring - top down, straight-6 stirred by Manuel.

I'm with you there, i'm getting way to old to bother with all this changing gear malarkey. My 520i this year was manual, it was bloody annoying.
Manuals should be reserved for sports cars, barges of any type have to be auto.

I'd agree, but I seem to remember you need to get the Aisin box in the Volvo good and hot to show issues, not easy on a quick test.

I know it's £995 over thread budget but I thought this deserved a place through sheer magnificence. One magnificently red V12 landyacht:

It looks like a fire engine in that colour. But if you like enormous bright red coupes, and can afford a few grands' worth of recommissioning, and want to keep it forever, it could be just the thing.

Well I never said it was practical or a remotely good idea but yes I certainly do like enormous bright red coupes.
