An R/S2 Saloon does exist. I'm not sure whether it was a one off or a very, very limited model. Not sold in the UK but Google will have the answers.
Link to Audi produced road car, or it didn't happen.
Some of the RS2 prototypes were saloons; 4 or 5 perhaps. I believe they were driven by Audi high-ups during the car's development. As stated, Porsche dissauded Audi from producing an RS2 Coupe as it would have been a competitor for their own cars.
Link? And I'm guessing they ended up being crushed?
The S2 saloon was a production model (although only 300 were ever produced)

The RS2 saloon never made production and the image DickyC attached is the one from the Audi Museum

That's the same in my Type 85 coupe though - longitudinal 5-cylinder engine with front wheel drive (or four-wheel drive) dictates it.

So, could an RS2 Coupe have been a great car? I thought about converting an S2 Coupe 10 years ago, but a 944 turbo seemed a better option.

That's the aux radiator isn't it? I had mine removed without any real issues.

Handling is certainly best described as 'undeersteery' without some form of suspensions modifications. I had RS2 front and rear anti roll bars fitted and H&R springs with Koni dampers fitted. It handled fantastically well after that.

My file of articles (and an original sales brochure) went with the car and I can't remember where I read it.

Opinion varies between two and four original RS2 Saloons being built. In the article I read they were built during development. There are stories of two being in the middle east. Of the other two, one is in the museum in Ingolstadt.

And then there are the recreations.

The thing I fairly certain would distinguish a real RS2 saloon from a fake is the rear light and reflector arrangement.

It would take a remarkable bodyshop to rustle up one of those.
I guess dimension wise and performance an RS3 saloon would be the modern equivalent

See one in blue most mornings - sounds great

I thought the aux radiator was the smaller one in front of the engine? Most of the five-cylinder Audis I recall had the main radiator alongside the engine, I recall looking at that photo of the S2 engine bay above and thinking the one on the front was an extra.

Yes, that's the main rad to the side of the engine in that S2.

Now you mention it, you're right. The aux rad is the one upfront. It's been a while since I've had my head under the bonnet of an S2!

Despite the other rad being side mounted, I never had any issues with the cooling system. Well, ignoring the time the fan switch died. I had some wire on me so made a very crude bypass to get me home before I fixed it.

I had a 2.6 facelift version and loved that car. It was a little tatty, but still the best car I've owned.
