Even if they need to be bland to drive, why do cars need to be bland to look at? I love interesting shapes, all the lookalike SUVs leave me cold.

I'd much rather have a bland, soulless car that I can count on to get me to work on time every day of the year than something with "character" that leaves me constantly apologising for being late.

Erm....don't buy an SUV? There are good looking cars still out there; although a better knowledge of aerodynamics coupled with safety regs does tighten the leash on designs a little.

What sort of car niche/type do you feel you would like where there isn't a good looking example?

Well ok I have an ageing warm hatch that looks interesting both inside and out. I can't think of an equivalent new car that looks as interesting to me (I do appreciate that beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc.). In fact I would like a few suggestions as really I could do with a new car.

So does it have to be interesting (as per your post I quoted) or does it have to be MORE interesting both inside and outside to your current car?

Why is it that people associate character with unreliability and manual chokes? Really quite odd.

Plenty of characterful older cars can be used daily and which are probably at least as reliable as their modern equivalents.

Yes they won't have all the electronic crap you find in a modern but they will probably be better made, have something called steering feel and be generally more exploitable and fun.

And if you prefer something more comfortable, smaller wheels means they may be better at that too.

I don't tend to buy modern cars and have never had a noteworthy breakdown but I do ensure my cars are properly maintained.

It's because in general people don't like to think anymore...

Cars are terrible on the whole.

It's like bloody iphones, they've engineered all the dicking about with the IT out of them.

Remember the old days when you spent most of your time fixing everything, now everything works and is in an instant...

Yawn, I long for the excitement of a manual choke, chrome wheels which deflate overnight, computers that crash, satellite TV you have to retune...

Yes cars are designed by boring idiots and bought by them mostly frown
Genuinely can't tell if you're joking or not biggrin

Focus RS

Not bland to drive but bland to look at. Compared to previous RS its a non event.
I suppose you'd prefer something like this over styled mess? hehe
Oh hell no - my wife saw one and said she thought it had 'bits falling off it'

Prior RS always had sufficient difference from a regular model to be instantly recognisable as an RS - the current one just looks like a normal 5 door with a half arsed effort at a bodykit.

I think the Honda looks brilliant. But I tend not to care what others think about me or let them influence my decisions.

Good question, I'll go with as interesting.

Maybe not "brilliant" but I quite like it, particularly in black or grey.

Saying that I am hardly a Golf R type of fellow smile

I think the Focus RS looks very different compared to the "inferior models". Especially when you consider how similar the RS rivals look compared to their "inferior models":-

The current Focus RS is definitely underwhelming on the road.

The previous one was noticable and 'beasty' looking.

The current one just isn't! I'm not saying it's a bad or bland car. But it doesn't stand out on the road like it should.

Moving the goal posts, then winkhehe

Sticking with French, I quite like the Peugeot 208 GTI smile small, good fun, pretty funky looks (I like that orange colour they do).

Whilst i understand your point i think you may have missed mine.

Previous hot golfs, Audi 3's etc have always been subtle so the current crop is an expected continuation of the 'look'. And i wouldnt disagree they are bland.

RS have generally always been a lot more 'visible'than their bread and butter counterparts.

Its not so much the RS is blander than its peers, its just blander than its ow heritage.

I recently drove a new top of the range, Discovery Sport.

I don’t think I have ever driven such a soulless, boring and bland car in all my life.

Is it me or have car manufacturers really perfected the art of the soulless car?

It makes me sad that character seems to a a word absent from many major manufacturers specification these days.
OP in new car is quiet/comfortable/efficient and refined shocker!

I drove the original Disco when it was released back in 1989, I can assure you it was truly awful an utter POS to drive on the road even in comparison to the other cars available at the time most of which were also laughable by modern standards, noisy/unrefined/sloppy/badly made and goping to look at, ah those were the days...
