It has been YEARS since I’ve experienced this feeling of just pure, illogical, impulse purchase WANT.
Haha. They do look to be good, but as a surburbanite with a family, even as an outdoors enthusiast, I would never need a small off roader. If we lived on the moors or in the wilds, we'd have a more road orientated vehicle as a second car like a Duster. There are very few places (and fewer and fewer countries) in which absolutely fantastic off road ability is needed.Clivey said:

Does anyone know if this has 3 diffs or not?
It doesn't have axle lockers; it uses a brake based Traction Control system similar to Land Rovers.blueST said:
It will be available with rear LSD in some markets, which should complement the electronic TC nicely. Probably won’t get that here though.
U suspect that few UK Jimny owners would need to be ability to drive the Rubicon Trail. Off road enthusiasts would be able to source the parts though.

Room for the dog & a few bales of hay - Tick
Wife needs a new car with some 4x4 capability - Tick
Simple, basic, cheap to run & reliable - Tick
Does it come in a nice blue colour ? - If so - Tick
It's not French, German or made by JLR & hopefully built in Japan - Tick
So long as its not overpriced we will have one, the success of Dacia at this price point is really good news for Suzuki. Loving the boxy arched one too

That dealerships like this manage to survive. The mind boggles.
I know. Sure thing is that I won’t be ordering there. Nerdherder said:

Looks pretty cool, similar to what I’ll be putting together, smaller wheels, in grey.Edited by Nerdherder on Saturday 21st July 13:17
Does anybody else think this is what the new defender should have been?

Isn't that another Photoshop? Not too far from what you could achieve with an actual one though. I think the new Defender needs to be rather bigger and heavier with a bigger engine for towing.
Yeah, photoshop job, like you say, just a few bolt on mods. Defender was never meant to be a battleship, I think cheap and bullet proof were the main design ideas?
I wouldn’t fall out with bigger (4 decent size seats and a bit of rear storage), bigger engine for towing... yep....
But you can keep your heavier
these'll be so popular. as a very young child i remember how popular the 90s suzuki vitara was, it seemed like almost every woman wanted one in pink with chunky wheels, and the guys who owned one would get chunky wheels and a huge bumpers put on the front.
i remember seeing sights like these. *shudder*

Actually there isn't much to choose in terms of weight between a Jimny and Series I Landrover (1.1 v 1.2 tons), although the last Defender I drove weighed over 2 tons (110 station wagon). The added weight is better for towing, which is what I use Land Rovers for mostly.I wouldn’t fall out with bigger (4 decent size seats and a bit of rear storage), bigger engine for towing... yep....

If you don't need the towing ability, I reckon a well driven Jimny will run rings around anything else, I think being short and narrow is such an advantage for off roading, unless you're on a side slope but I try and avoid these anyway. A physically small vehicle can pick a better line than a bigger one and won't get wedged in trees or start sliding sideways (crew cabs pickups are a sod for doing the latter).
I imagine the low fuel costs will be nirvana for anyone used to things like Defenders.
