Aside from ramming them onto the hard shoulder, what is the best way of dealing with these brain-dead idiots?

For example, you are in lane one gaining on a moron in lane two who is overtaking thin air. Do you remain in lane one and pass them? Or move from lane one to lane three, and back to lane one once past?

The first option is much easier, but if they move across into your lane and collide with you as you are passing, who is at fault from a legal perspective?

my Uncle (when he was alive) would put in in front of them and then shove the handbrake on

Check mirrors, signal, move out to lane two, then in to lane three, if it’s clear. Overtake, check rear view mirror, when you see the entire front of the car in lane two in your rear view mirror. Check mirrors again, signal, move in to lane two. If it’s clear, after checking mirrors, move in to lane one. That’s the easiest and most stress free way of dealing with it.

Frustrating, and a bit of an inconvenience. And as hard as it may be. It’s just better to not allow their poor driving to effect you. They don’t understand or appreciate what they are doing. You’ll not change their opinion or driving habits, unfortunately. So it’s just best to pass them (if safe to do so) and leave them to it

Aggressively switch to the fast lane, overtake, pull back into the slow lane, slow down so that they overtake you. Repeat.

I do it the correct way moving L1 to L3 and back to L1. Where possible as one clean movement on the face of it from L1 to L3 and back again. Checking mirrors at all times.

Had it this morning and drove me up the wall tbh. I was tempted to go straight down L1, but felt not comfortable with it as a) it is technically not the thing to do b) more so the guy was weaving in L2.

Most drivers seem to ping pong from the each side of the lane not good and make using L1 even more of a risk. As for the trucker that could not keep his lorry in L2 and moaned at me for tooting at him, flash your lights all you want, incompetent tt, learn what the broken white lines mean.

Lane 1, 2, 3, 2, 1. Repeat. Don't get tempted to drive in L2 or L3 even if you see a L2 hogger up ahead. You should be driving in L1 for quite a bit of your journey.

I just pass them and get on with my day. Whether I pass them on the left or right depends on various factors such as the traffic, or if I can be bothered to swing out into lane 3 and then back into lane 1. If I'm in lane 1 and approaching someone in lane 2 then I'll usually just keep going, but be ready to dive into the hard shoulder if they do start moving lanes. In my experience though, they never do.

only pass on the left if travelling 70 mph or under. I think that's the way to escape prosecution if ever pulled up for it.

Why would anyone want to drive in the 1st lane?

It's full morons driving at 50mph and lorrys.

OP needs to drive better and stop moaning. There is a reason why everyone sticks to the middle lane and 3rd for overtaking.

I think a lot of it is down to people using the terms "slow lane" and "fast lane". These idiots probably think they are going too fast to be in the "slow lane" so just obliviously get in everyone's way instead.

The fact that learner drivers are now allowed on the motorway will hopefully mean that drivers will be more educated in the future. Just so long as they're not being taught to drive by lane-hoggers!

Personally I would like to see lots of "KEEP LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING" signs as well.

You need to retake your test if that's your attitude. And next time you are lane-hogging, kindly get out the way.

Hopefully just for laughs.

If not I agree with the other posters.

There is far from a constant line of traffic. Rather like this MLM I had morning, yes traffic was heavy, but there was absolutely zero traffic in L1 and the vehicles in front were miles off.

The problem with "hogging" L2 is that anyone wanting to travel more quickly (irrespective of the legal nature of that speed) is now forced from effectively L1 or L2 to overtake with potential for faster vehicles coming up.

I don't mind if people are making progress and only a short time from passing another vehicle but if nothing is off for decent time then you are taking the pee.
