Of course it’s cynical - when the hardware is essentially the same and your brand differentiation is largely based on spangly bits and chassis/ECU tuning, you’re only a tiny bit of marketing budget away from being seen through.
So, what differences would a bodyshell befitting a Bentley have that the VAG one doesnt ?

In the past a Rolls/Bentley would have been a lot heavier gauge steel than say a Cortina, but the development nowadays means that just making things beefier is not the way to do it, its just so much more complex than that.

The steel wont be any different, I really cant see, other than a feeling of being short change because it does service under cheaper cars, what the issue is.

How is it cynical? What specific components are shared? How much of the 2-tonne Bentley's hardware is part-for-part shared with a £200k Lambo, or £100k Porsche? or £80k Audi? Or £50k VW?

And how does it matter?

It’s a triumph of branding, nothing more. Nothing to do with whether or not the body in white or whatever is good enough to have a plastic chrome “Bentley” mesh grille stuck on the front.

For just over 200k you can have one with crashed bent up bonnet look.

Looks like Darth Vadar!

I really like Bentley interiors, and this is no exception. On the outside, its just another SUV though. Under the hood - other marques can rival it.

If I had the money, I don't know how I could justify it. Its just not very good value compared to what other brands are offering. The nicer interior isn't really worth the best part of the £100k premium for the Bentley!

As for shared bits (aside from the visibly obvious switchgear, infotainment, cup holders, body hard points etc), the most telling, depressing detail has to be the standard stebling clock that Bentleys get - exactly the same cheapo generic electric clock you get in a VW, but it has a crappy brand name printed on the front. Who are they kidding (apart from idiots)?

I'm sure Bentley will be devastated that your 200-grand won't be going there way.

But out of interest, what similarities do you think you can see between a Touareg and a Bentayga?
If you parked a Tourareg, Cayenne, Q7 and Bentayga next to each other in that order you would see the similarities. I don't consider myself an aficionado of design, but even I can see the cars are clearly related. If platform sharing is so great (fine for the mass market), why don't VW use the Crafter platform for the Bentayga? Chuck some fancy leather seats in it and an expensive clock in the dash then charge 200 grand for it, no one would ever need know.

As you know I'm no fan of SUV's but if you look at the L405 Range Rover it was designed from the ground up as a Range Rover. It's not used a modified Mondeo platform, or a stretched Fiat Panda chassis, it's a Range Rover and designed from the very start to be a luxury SUV. Not my thing, but no pissing about, no compromises.

Shared platforms? Platforms , schmatforms- who cares? It is just ghastly, cynically oversized status symbol to impress the other Pringle sweatered crew down at the golf club

For anyone who is considering a Bentayga as a status symbol, I should point out that one of these ,monstrosities was parked quite prominently at the Beaulieu Supercar show the weekend before last and nobody was paying any attention to it whatsoever.

On the other hand the bright orange Bowler Wildcat had crowds surrounding it for most of the day.

So there it is.

Are you sure it was a Bentley and not a Hyundai in a disabled bay?

My very left wing Lady friend in advertising coined a slogan.

'Disgusting cars for disgusting people'.

It does have a ring to it.

I must say, its not something I would ever buy, though I spent a happy half hour on the configurator and ended up with a sort of dark Purple one with a contrasting lighter purple interior, they do do some really nice, individual colour schemes.

There cant be many of us, blinged up Volkswagen or not wouldnt fancy a day or two in one, 600 bhp, 0-100 mph in 9 seconds or so in what looks like a rather nice cabin, I bet its a bloody lovely thing to tool about in, I think even the most ardent naysayer/socialist workers party comrade would secretly love it, like eating Foie gras, a guilty pleasure, and after a couple of days, I expect going back to your normal daily would feel a bit bad.

I liked Jay Kay's dismissive attitude towards it on TG last year. 'Wouldn't catch me dead in one'. Most amusing.

Cars like this and the Rolls Cullinary Fhartom III are simply there for those who like to 'wear' their money. It's always been a source of amusement and if it results in jobs and companies prospering, then crack on.

She probably meant things like Kias , Dacias and other cheap sort of cars as very left wing people always despise the poor and hold them in contempt but adore the wealthy.

I think you are very wrong on the Bentley and Rolls Royce.
