But according to all the head to head tests I’ve read doesn’t feel it, and is considered to be more fun to drive. Face it, the Swift Sport isn’t the car it used to be, and I really used to like it.

I admire your devotion to the cause, but I was only offering a few innocent words of encouragement from one Jap car lover to another. The other poster obviously loves the Swift Sport having owned 3 of them. There was really no need for you to pop up and defend the Up's honour in this instance. I know you'll have read every scrap of information out there while you eagerly await delivery of what must surely be the winner in longest lead time/cheapest car ratio, but seriously, your status as Up GTI fanboi wears a bit thin at times.

I also quite fancy one of these as a runabout, but struggle to see past buying the best Lupo GTi I could find for less than half the price.

It was a faily inncocent question to be honest, and I was interested in your point of view. Not so much now.

German B&B Motorsport just announced a tune to 145 HP for around 1200 quid:

https://www.formacar.com/en/news/view/9110.html

I am sure others will follow suit and at 140 HP or thereabouts this should have enough oomph to move from short of bloody brilliant to effing bloody brilliant.

Agreed totally, 145 hp in this would be a real hoot.
Just need VW to make the things fast enough.

And then a SKODA Citigo Gti for those of us on a budget spin

Wouldn't want a tuner to make it a more boosty/torquee, but maybe a bit more top end, say 135hp or so should be reasonable and make it resemble an NA experience a bit more again... Anyhow a remap shouldn't cost more than £300-400...

Things I like to know;

- Does it have enough of the Golf GTI DNA? Fun yet practical.
- Is it more than half the car the Golf GTI is for half the (list) price?
- Is it any good on a long journey? Seats, ride, refinement etc.
- is the Lupo GTI better?
- is the non-disingageable ESP to cover up a so so chassis or just ensuring the safety of younger buyers?
- is the 90TSI a cut price GTI?

Now that would be fun!

Agree on comments re. Swift losing it’s way. Having driven neither of them and only seeing the Up! briefly in the metal, I’d probably rather have the VW. The only VW I would have, actually.

Might get a test drive of the Swift today as I’m visiting the dealership and they’ve got a yellow one in (best colour in my opinion), will at least get a look at it anyway.

Look forward to a twin test.

Edit: Didn’t drive. Carbon bits look tacky on the yellow, much better on the white, probably great on the grey. Seats are lovely. Dash is great. Glossy plastic inside, hate that stuff. Other half fancies one at some point, hope she goes for it. Would like to compare against mine. Sorry for slight derailment.

So, VW made a cock up! and underestimated demand.
Does that mean they are now playing catch up!

Any particular reason a car like this needed to come with a tracker? Are they that easy to borrow?
If it's keyless, yes.

It’s not, and it’s not an option.

£14k! Look out for a Fiat panda sporting multijet for £1.4k . The little 1250cc 4 cyl diesel is a peach of a motor with a chain cam . It has 16 valves and double overhead cams .....and the turbo! And no DPF! Remapped it’ll produce around 100bhp with loads of mid range grunt. Get the motor running right and make sure the wastegate doesn’t jam and you’re away. Pootle and you’ll get 70 plus mpg.....rag it and it falls to 55! Had some fun in mine this summer around the Milton Keynes racetracks!!! But change oil every 7k or so as it only holds 2.5 litres. Knockout little hottish hatch......with five doors too!
Yeah, I'm alright thanks, will stick with the GTI.
hehe Had to chuckle at it being described as a "hottish hatch". Tepidish perhaps.

Slightly lighter than the Lupo: 997 kg vs 1015 kg. Slightly less power but significantly more torque 112 lbft vs 147 lbft.

For a 13-19 year old car with a fraction of the safety, higher emissions (not ideal if you live in a ULEZ), higher tax, heavier and only a tiny bit quicker I'd want to be paying a LOT less than half the price of the UP. For half the price of the UP you could get a three year old, low mileage Swift Sport.

I have the same issues with this I had a year ago when it was announced - too heavy by 100kgs, the wrong engine, and the wheels are far too big.

These small turbos just don't work - you might as well have a turbo diesel, because at least with them you get something resembling throttle response. They need to be raggable!

Still, it's a great price and looks fantastic - and the base car is one of the nicest places to sit at any price as it is, so this will work. I'd love a go, and might consider one in a couple of years - small cars are just better cars.
You've not driven it then?
Nope I haven't. But certain things you just know.
Turbo diesel? Throttle response? laugh

Come on guys, keyless isn't a problem. For a few quid get yourself a key blocker pouch. It's not hard.
