I've had an S7 Edge for a couple of years, which does everything that I would need, but it developed a thick pink line down the right side of the screen that I understand is not unheard of (phone never been dropped). This is annoying and I could live with it or even get it fixed, but new screens seem rather expensive and presumably there is no reason it wouldn't recur at some point. Anyway, that's got me looking for a new smartphone, but this failure has completely put me off another Samsung. What are currently considered to be the best alternatives? Could you recommend a good android? I'm also thinking of switching to Apple, possibly an 8 or an X.

Whatever you end up getting, don't buy now. New iPhones next month and Google will release a new Pixel soon as well.

I'm typing this on my new huwei (how do you even pronounce it?) P20.

Coming from a knackered old Moto G4 plus it's a thing of wonder. Camera is excellent. The P20 plus is supposed to be even better.

And after a fair bit of shopping around carphone warehouse did the best deal by far.

I recently did a similar thing and worked out more cost efficient to get a Sim only contract and bought the phone Sim free.
For the price, I think this is a fantastic Sim free bundle - I'd buy this - https://www.oneplus.com/uk/back-to-school-2018?fro...

The best value phone for me is the Huawei Mate 10 pro which is now available for £400. The best phone though has to be the Huawei P20 Pro

I was in the market for a new phone after my last 3 cheapo handsets that I bought outright failed or slowed down over a period of 18m or so. I wanted to get something a bit more premium this time.

It worked out much cheaper for me to get an upgrade from Vodafone sim only to contract using carphone warehouse. Vodafone couldn't get near.

Obviously you need to amortise the cost of a phone and your sim only cost and compare to a new contract that includes said phone. Sometime the contract route it cheaper by a significant amount.

I made the jump from an iPhone 7 in Feb to a OnePlus 5T and I'm very pleased with it. I certainly recommend the OnePlus products. I haven't had a chance to play with the 6 yet, but I recon my other half will get one when she is due an upgrade in November

I’ve got an iPhone 8 which I like and is all the phone I need. I had a Huawei as a work phone a year ago which was very good, much better than the Samsung it replaced. If I moved away from Apple it would be Huawei.

That's probably closer than what I just typed out and close enough.

I've just moved away from apple after 10 years. I've got a Wahwaay P20 Pro and I love it. Awesome camera and great battery life.

Wah-way is indeed the correct non-tonal (ie vocal) pronunciation

Personally I would go with a Mate10 over a P20pro if androids you’re thing

If not I’d wait a couple of weeks for the Apple keynote and see what’s happening with their range as the long rumoured SE2 may make an appearance

I'm keen to see the new Pixel 3 XL but everything seems to suggest it has a dreaded notch.

Honestly, I have an iPhone X and the notch is unnoticed after minutes of use

Notch on the P20 is invisible when browsing on here.

And when it's visible it's kinda cool, what's not to like??

I've been looking at reviews of mid range +/- £200 phones.

The general consensus at the moment seems to be the Xiaomi A2. Although I'm not sure I can live with the big camera bump on the back.

Or maybe I should just stick with my Huawei P10 Lite (although I fancy something new and shiny).
