I have a 2009 Kia Sportage with a blown engine, still on finance ☹️. Realistically, what are my options regarding getting rid of it? I still have a couple of years to go on the finance, it's just sitting in a garage at the moment, uneconomical to replace the engine! Can't be scrapped as I don't "own" it, could it be traded in?

How far through the finance agreement are you - has over 50% of the total amount (including interest and/or balloon) been paid

If so I’d Voluntarily Terminate the finance, give the car back to the lender and walk away with nothing more to pay.

What about fair wear and tear?

Surely you can't hand back a car that is unfit for purpose?

See that's what I was thinking but I don't think I could hand back a non working car. Even though i have only been responsible for 10k of the mileage on there - if anybody can tell me different I'd love to know, I am approaching the halfway mark!

You can't. Car must be in reasonable condition, and by any measure 'broken' is not reasonable.

Surely an engine for a near on 10yr old Sportage can't be much more than a couple hundred quid?? And then a day or two labour with a half decent garage?

I would be looking at some facts on costs first. Is this a pure HP, ie you are purchasing the car outright rather than a PCP deal. If so how much do you have left to pay?

You say it is uneconomical to repair, why? Surely a secondhand motor would be a good way to get the car going, otherwise every penny you have put into it is thrown away.

If it is at a dealer then I can understand the costs but have you looked at every option?

I would say a decent indie should be able to source and drop a engine in for under a couple of K surely?

Which in your case would be the best option if the rest of the car is sound.

If somebody can point me in the direction of where to look for a new engine and a decent place to fit it, in Devon, then please do! It is on HP finance not PCP. According to my garage the engine seized - no warning at all, it had oil in it etc, I believe this is a common enough fault on these engines and it was literally just out of manufacturers warranty when it happened, it's been garaged up for a while now. I got put off having an engine put in by my garage who said ones on eBay etc, you didn't know how long they'd been sat in a scrapyard for etc and also to be honest, scraping together £1500+ for it to be repaired would just be nigh on impossible!

You'd be surprised how much idiots and debt junkies are prepared to overpay for things when all they take into consideration are whether they can afford the monthlies.

Thanks, I'd like to describe myself as neither an idiot or a debt junkie. I'm just asking for some advice that's all!

Did you ask Kia whether they’d contribute toward a repair?

Surely the 7yr warranty would have expired in 2016? You'd already covered 10k miles? And there's still a couple of years on the finance to go, even now?

Blimey, what WAS this finance deal...?

Anyway, it's unlikely the warranty would have covered it - "wear and tear" is excluded. You'd need to have proved it was an inherent fault, which is going to be bloody difficult after 7 years and however many tens of thousands of miles from new, even assuming the Kia dealer service history was spotless. These very long warranties are basically academic by the expiry.

You will never get a new engine alone for £1500, so stop dreaming and stop taking the advice of your garage and get on Ebay and/or call up some scrapyards / breakers.

Have it disappear and claim on insurance? (not serious)

Second hand car from an independent dealer on straight HP.

It’s hardly an uncommon way to procure a vehicle.

I do know what the engine code is and had thought of buying a car with the same - I know a few different models have them (d4ea engine) - with say rear end damage or whatever but a running engine, but even Kia themselves couldn't tell me if it would be possible to do a straight engine swap even though the codes match! Which again, put me off doing anything yet.
