Just about every car has been ruled out due to image issues. What's left?
Anything immaculate and 15 years old. 10 at a push.Just about every car has been ruled out due to image issues. What's left?
Old E46 330, Volvo V70, Saab aero, Alfa 156 maybe a 159, E39, I'm not up to speed on Merc, so can't comment on these - all these things are classy if well looked after and well maintained, and critically, unmodified.
Any fool can buy a new car, but you need to be dedicated and / or skilled to keep an old 'luxury' car on the road.
That's my take anyway.
And for comments almost diametrically opposed to those above - see the X2 M35 thread. PH where opinions matter.
I dont want to have to have skill and dedication to keep my daily driver going, been there, done that, painting, welding, rebuilding engines, plugging the laptop in, buying and fitting bits weekly.
I bought an M135i, Its a revelation not having to spend weekends faffing with it, everything works and it doesnt smell of oil or coolant, its suspension doesnt creak, I havent had a wheel off in the three months I have had it, I havent jacked it up, I dont have a list of pending tasks, I just get in and drive it, put petrol in it and give it a wash now and again.
I may go back to older cars at some point but not feeling like a fool with a newer one, no more of a Chav no that when I had a Red 944 but I got accused of a Mid Life Crisis then, 350Z was called the same, Audi TT meant I like mens bottoms and cut ladies hair apparently, Merc CLS I was accused of being a low tier drug dealer, Local Councillor and an old man.
Nothing wrong with older cars but dont make out people who get new ones are stupid, they arent the ones spending their Saturdays changing ball joints and handbrake cables.

And it is a damn sight more fun than the modern equivalent.

But I don't think a new car is classy. It's not - new cars are available to everyone if they want it. So if you have a newer car, you're part of the subset of everyone. Which is ordinary.
If you want to make a statement, you need to have done something interesting to make it.
And like it or not maintaining an older car very well, does make some kind of statement about your personal values. Usually because the cars mentioned have long ago passed their cost of economic repair.
But you know - everyone has an opinion and does what they think is best. So the best of luck to you, and crack on with whatever you want to drive,,,,, and I'll do the same. (which is normally a shed as I CBA to spend any money on a 'decent' car, and I'll trash it anyway)

Born in an East Kent village, my granddad called me ‘me old chavvy’ (Romany for boy) lived in a new village Council house. Now drive a (paid cash for) BMW F30 335d. Sorry - no white socks, but three degrees, do I qualify?
It depends how you were exposed to them. Growing up “int’ North” they were all over the estates. So I just associate them as a status symbol in the estates. In fairness to the OP's mate, BMW's do seem to attract the lower orders as they age (the cars, not the lower orders). The E90's now are going through their council phase now. They usually seem to come out the other side with some respectability when the enthusiasts that can afford to look after them properly get hold of them again.
My manager has had 3 BMW's as company cars, the one he has now is ok, but the E90 was a bit naughty and the E46 was a bloody nightmare, it got to the stage where he would only do local trips with it.

BMW make good cars. People want them.
As they depreciate more people can afford them.
What's the problem? The fact many are still on the road while other brands of similar ages are in the scrapyard says a lot about the cars.
I would happily drive an old or newer BMW. What I don't like is the cost of parts when you need them.

Are they really that expensive for parts though ?As they depreciate more people can afford them.

A lot of bits, especially consumables are dead cheap, same with Mercs and Audis, then you have the option of secondhand bits.
Am talking about the normal models, not M, S, RS, AMG etc, you need to know what you are buying then, for example E55 AMG brake disks, fairly cheap, then the same model (W211) became the E63, different brakes that cost several times more.
To be honest, can get caught out with most makes, a lot is down to the specific part, whether its shared across models and other makes or whether its specific.
