BMW make good cars. People want them.

As they depreciate more people can afford them.

What's the problem? The fact many are still on the road while other brands of similar ages are in the scrapyard says a lot about the cars.

I would happily drive an old or newer BMW. What I don't like is the cost of parts when you need them.
I am not sure, OEM E36 parts were cheap enough, I found.

So long as they're not too crusty I can't see the problem.
A quick google came up with this:

hehe
I genuinely can't tell if that's meant to be a joke or if people actually get off on it!

Sorry - no white socks, but three degrees, do I qualify?
Thanks to the rebranding of polytechnics and Blair's targets for "edjercation", degrees and a university education, much like BMWs, are no longer the preserve of people with brains or money.
A couple of crap grades at a level will see you onto a degree course just like minimum wage can get you into a Beemer. Now pass my tinfoil hat.

You can’t please everyone, so the OP’s workmate, should go out and buy what’s right for him.

My last few cars have been a few E9x series BMW’s, a (whisper it) white Mk7 Golf GTD, Audi TT Roadster and now a W205 C Class, so i’m probably the epitome of a chav in this regard.

But let’s be honest, BMW make some fantastic cars. What would you rather drive, a 1 series or an Astra?

Of course there are people on here who just want to be seen as different at all costs, and slate anything that is popular, while trotting out some obscure reason why their 15 year old Saab is better than any “bland, white, pcp’d, eurobox chav mobile” and they might be right.

But the fact is, the German manufacturers make some really rather excellent cars, which a lot of people want to buy/drive/lease/own. They are so popular in fact that I would say that they owned by a large cross section of the public and to me, don’t carry a particular negative image.

I drive an E92 BMW, the OP's colleague would hate me.

Which is excellent.

This is Pistonheads. Half the threads are posted to stir a reaction.

The place has too many trolls.

OP's mate is right, BMWs sometimes do attract the underclass, and I say that as the owner of two of them (both old, one slightly less decrepit than the other) oh and white socks are horrifically chavvy.

You only have to look at the badly modified BMW facebook page for the evidence.

Anything that becomes popular ends up being a target for that group of people who don't like popular things.

Maybe something like a Peugeot would be better for OP's colleague...?

They look very modern, have great interiors, and cheap lease deals available.

Or something Korean?

i noticed this shift when pretty much every premium brand diluted their top end offering with the likes of M sport, AMG line and S line.

What that did was turn premium LOOKING vehicles into sporty ones, regardless of engine under the bonnet, and attracting the yobs who think they look cool doing 80 in a 30 zone with their 20 inch aloys and fake exhausts on a 1.something diesel. Throw in badge delete option and jobs a good un.

The german premium brands attracted the youths as well as the old mondeo family to great success. Throw in some juicy lease deals and suddenly a vast chunk of society has access to, and more crucially wants, an M sport/ S line type of car.

You'll find that many cars that would have been too expensive for the knuckle draggers to drive many years ago are easily available with finance.

The average chavvy type (I assume people are referring to) like to wear their 'wealth' for all to see. So something like a BMW/Merc/Audi are considered premium and in turn appeal to these types of people. Doesn't matter if it's a poverty spec 114 because it's a BMW or an A180 because it's a Merc. People see the badge before the spec of a car.

Thing is you can also count loud brash cars as appealing to the same types despite them being good cars. A Focus RS or C63 are both great cars but appeal in many ways to these types, in the same ways Imprezas used to.

Personally though I don't think I see enough of these chavvy types in any particular make or model to sway my view on all drivers. Except maybe the Vauxhaul Zafira! haha

It depends as the ones age they fall into the lower price ranges of people not able to fund the running costs of such machines. Like any car though any high price car will still have high prices of servicing and needs moving forward they won't change.

The availability of financing has meant the explosion of new metal constantly moving, but some owners cannot afford to replace tyres or service them properly. Equally, so much "discount" is hidden in financing it is alarming.

All the manufacturers are at it though so it is far from just one, equally many want the looks of the halo model without the associated costs (or equally in some cases don't have a need for the performance).

As for BMW being chavvy, I think any vehicle can be in the right set of circumstances. But I will admit the 1 series in lower specification does seem to attract some right clowns (and that is coming from a 6 owner).

Nice car. But black socks are strictly for undertakers and butlers only.

Just to clarify, is the OP's work mate's snobbery aimed at what were once called barry boys or the £40k millionaires ? Is he worried that he's going to be lumped in with someone who spends most of his money on sleeve tattoos and own brand lager, or someone in a new build house with AstroTurf and a PCP'd bottom of the range BMW on the drive?
