I've noticed since I had my car (991.2GT3) that there is a little clink from the back suspension when I go over short indents in the road, it seems mainly about 40mph and little indents about a foot wide and maybe an inch or so deep, it's as if it's hitting the stoppers. I've also driven a PDK GT3 which did the same thing so I'm guessing this is just normal?

I had a slight knock over undulations on the near side rear that progressively turned into a clanking...on investigation a brake calliper bolt was loose (actually completely undone) probably removed/ undone previously and not replaced or tightened properly. The clanking was the calliper rattling.

You can also get variable noises from the cage when hitting bumps...

GT cars have solid suspension joints in some areas... this allows for more precise location and control... trade-off is that NVH is impacted and you get more noise and some jolts transferred through - that you wouldn't have gotten in a normal rubber bushed car.

My car “clanks” since new.
There are various “tickets” opened by Porsche workshops for this problem as not all the cars do that (about 50% according to my friends’ cars I’ve been in)...but Porsche never gave an answer.
In my opinion it’s something related to the rear springs, maybe too soft in the “helper” coils in some cars (supplier issue?).

If you listen to Lars Kern Nurburgring record lap you can hear the noise, although my Gt3 clanks much more on the Nordschleife than that one.

No caliper issue at least in my car as I already changed the pads and bolts weren’t loose...

Aslo it’s not the cage as the same noise occurs in some Touring Pack.

Interesting.

My car clanks in exactly the same way, although it has somewhat settled down with miles.

GT3'ism which I thought was the cage, but could easily be rear suspension.

Yes it’s something in the suspensions...

A friend of mine with a ‘17 Clubsport left the car 2 months at the dealer.
He had:
- cage removed and reinstalled (the clank didn’t change without the cage);
- dampers changed;
- roll bar removed (car tested) and reinstalled;
- engine mounts swapped with the .1 hydraulic ones (ours are electric) and then reinstalled.

The noise never changed!

I say it’s the higher “helper” coils of the spring touching each other when the suspension suddenly loads.

Holy moly..

All that and no joy.

My 991GT3.1 was full of noises. My Gen2 not nearly as much...

I just drive and enjoy because they have the warranty ..

Wow, that's useful to know, all those things didn't help. If 50% of cars are doing this I'm thinking this isnt meant to happen. I could ignore it but I must admit it doesn't feel like a healthy noise to me so it's taking a bit of enjoyment out of driving it.

I think I will have to visit the dealer and get a mechanic to listen to it with me and see what they come up with.

So Mr Brick, did your friend just accept the noise then in the end?

... just confirming, it is something that happens both sides individually. At first I thought it was only the left but after a while I found it clinks on the right too, just not as often. I guess because roads are often bumpier on the outside, particularly the rougher B roads here in Norfolk.

I’ve had various after market suspension set ups on 911s of different flavours. Creaking, clanking and jangling was par for the course, especially with helper springs.

Yes and no...in February this year he had the car back, the dealer said “there’s a ticket opened for this noise in Weissach, we’ll let you know as soon as they give us the solution” but he was clearly taken for a ride as today there’s still no answer.
It seems Porsche is not very interested in fixing “noises” but only catastrophic failures.

His car is an April ‘17 build, one of the very first.
Mine is a late Nov ‘17 build and clanks too.
Another friend has a Dec ‘17 and it’s perfectly silent, just as a couple of ‘18 that I know of.
Also I heard no noise on two RS gen2 I had the pleasure to sit in on the Nordschleife (same cage, different suspensions).

My OPC says it’s the cage but I know it is not...they simply are not good : (

Fortunately the car is so much fun to drive and I don’t care the noise when on track, on the road I got used, but I certainly didn’t expect such a metallic noise from a 180K euro car.
New passengers generally get scared at the first “clank” as loud as it is...

Interesting reading. I don't have the money or necessarily the want for a 991 (especially being predominantly PDK) but recently had the KW Competition coilovers put on my 996 GT3 and that too is noisy on little undulation. Almost a clank or knock sometimes.

Previously she was shod with Onlins R&T which were silent. The KWs were only fitted after they went back to Deutschland for refurbishment.

Afaik that's a characteristic of the KWs even the expensive motorsport competition ones. 'They all do that sir'...

my 991.1 GT3 does this too; same type of road conditions
its been back in the garage for a weeks worth of investigation, different tech, different roads, different conditions
they could find nothing wrong with the car ( its also been to CG for alignment, and they gave it a clean bill of health)

so I just accept it now!

I have a noise that sounds similar to a shell creak from the rear, it sounds like the left rear but not always there, not had it checked it's more creak than clank !

Much better by the way after fitting a DSC PASM unit and using this on sport all the time (I prefer the feel to non sport on the DSC)

Useful thread as I have this issue too. I can make it happen by unloading the suspension at low speed on say a big speed hump or a poor road surface which makes the cage sound like someone is hitting it with a small hammer slowly in succession. I think something which is connected to the suspension is loose or has too much play under maximum travel and when it comes back the clash is amplified by the cage where its mounted to the rear top mounts.

Booked into my local OPC so I will report back.
