RE: Mercedes-AMG A35 unveiled with 306hp
Discussion
I was in the market for an m140i. But the interior felt very dated and the styling is marmite. The wheels could be doing with a change too. That said, the sound it made was lovely and it's incredibly smooth, but the chassis felt very spongy around corners. RWD and 6cyl isn't the be all and end all as I found out, to my disappointment.
My partner has an M135i and an M2 (I have a tatty E39 diesel so I think we know where the speed requirement sits) and I have to say that comparing the 135i (140i) to the A35 or the M2 to the A45, just doesn't resonate with me.
If you like manual cars with lower and perhaps more easily visited limits then the BMW are where you should go, if you like ultimate speed machines then the AMG are epic. You will go quicker! And in all fairness, apart from the engine the135i is a deeply flawed if very loveable car (though the M2 is beyond epic!!)
The better comparison would be an x-drive BMW Auto to the AMG and at that point the BMW seems to me to fall down - I think Merc do the techno thing better, though I do wonder about the limits being so high that when it goes wrong the accident starts in Cornwall and finishes in Somerset.

fk me that interior is absolutely vile.
Each to his own but it's the direction things are heading. Better get used to it.
I simply dislike clichés and I like progress.
All comers? Someone mentioned the 140 thats all. It's a dinosaur compared to this.
I can't see how a old dark crappy small screen 140 interior is preferable to progress. The new A-Class will sell well because that interior has masses of showroom appeal IMO.
And the BMW will be heading down the same turbocharged 4 pot/bigger screen dash route with its replacement.

Ooh you're such a purist. You must be right in that case. You're one of those driving gods I've heard about aren't you?
RWD. 6 cylinders. Tablet. Got a hat-trick there. So predictable.
So early in the thread too. Deeply impressive.
You say this as if there was anything wrong with liking the classic setup with RWD and straight 6. Also, some people here seem to think that you can only enjoy s car on the very edge. Where does this idiotic notion come from?RWD. 6 cylinders. Tablet. Got a hat-trick there. So predictable.

Also pardon me for saying this, but the styling is very fast-and-furious. And it doesn't fit Merc at all. It's like man in his 60s putting on his teenage grandson's clothes in an attempt to be hip and modern. Outcome is predictable and there's no point and no need for it. MB doesn't have to go there.

Nothing wrong with it at all (my cars have got huge engines) but it's not a thread about a vehicle with that drivetrain. It just made me sigh inwardly when the Mercedes was dismissed in the very first post on the thread because it's not a RWD 6 cylinder BMW.

I bought an A45 AMG Chav spec (aero package same as the one in this thread) for the wife and it is easily head and shoulders above everything else in that sector. Even with the "tablet" stuck the dash.

The next 140 is going to be a 4 pot, so now is the time to buy a new one as it will probably be the last small straight 6 hatchback you'll be able to buy. Also pardon me for saying this, but the styling is very fast-and-furious. Also you can buy the AMG A Class without the aeropack and look like a 180d if that's what you want

Indeed, and lets be honest the 1 series has to be one of the worst examples going in terms of a 6 cylinder RWD BMW. The chassis/suspension is a complete mess, and it gets mentioned how poor it is in every 1 series review I've read. Looks are subjective but for me its one of the most ugly Bmw's ever made. I'm not that impressed with the chav direction that the A Class has gone in, but I don't think its ugly and I do really like the interior.
The 1 series interior is like dropping back into 2004, dated doesn't even cover it.
