I've had various watches over the years which I've moved on within the space of 6 months.

I've recently really been craving a Speedy moon watch, since I originally seen this watch a few years ago the price has increased a fair amount! Now I'm a bit maturer I can really appreciate the design and provenance of this piece and the presentation pack it comes in is really quite impressive too.

There are a few new examples on eBay but I have some concerns around face to face transactions involving £2.5k upwards=, has anyone bought a premium watch this war before?

Alternatively, What sort of discounts can I expect on the high street?

Anyone with speedy's wanting to share pics to bate me into taking the plunge??

I got my new 2016 model (I think) from ebay, paid on a credit card through paypal for maximum protection, I paid just over £2600 iirc. I took it straight to a jewellers that sells them where they confirmed it was either original or the faker had gone to very extreme lengths (too much for a £3k watch) to make it seem so. They said the only way to be 100% certain was to strip it down so I am happy that it's original. Things like sequential part numbers on it and all the cool goodies related to the moonwatch.

That's a decent price, about where the eBay ones seem pitched at the moment and there's one only a few miles up the road from me. Most insisting on bank transfer before collection or cash and that's where it gets a little awkward.

The one thing I'm 100% certain of is spotting fakes in these watches as they're well known for shocking subdial spacing due to not being able to replicate the movement :-) First thing I started googling last night, the fakes look shocking!

Any pics??

I'll try and find pics. Another way to spot fakes is looking for the Omega logo etched in the centre of the hesalite, very difficult to see but once you see it, you can spot it easily.

I'll post pics in a minute

Picked mine up from goldsmiths in Solihull late last year, the price increase had just come into effect but still managed to pick it up for just over £3k after haggling.

Is that the wind up or battery version?

Polywatch will become your friend as far as the Hesalite goes, it's very soft so marks easily. The good thing is that it cleans up easily with Polywatch.

Mine on a Geckota strap. One of the great things about this watch is it goes with so many different straps.

I got mine unworn from WF and paid more than what Dom charges but fair bit less than RRP. Reason I went that route is the trade-in price I got for my Tudor.

If I was buying outright though I’d just pay the extra and go via Dom rather than eBay. You’re looking at c10% more for complete peace of mind.

Whatever you do, do get one! smile

That looks ace,

I want a leather strap for mine, I’ve got 3 bracelets from different eras and a black NATO but your strap is exactly what I want.

Geckota here I come.

I’ve always dreamed of an Omega, I was looking at one from duty free or second hand, but got in touch with Dom Hackett who sourced me a new Moonwatch Professional within a week.

Love it, I don’t really wear anything else now.

Got a couple of NATO’s for it, a Hirch shark skin on deployant and managed to the official Omega leather band for the smart days, just looking out for an Omega deployant clasp that isn’t £££

On the topic of these..

I've only been 'into' watches for a few years really, currently only own some Seiko automatics.. But I remember it was (a variant of) the Speedmaster that I saw in a store that first caught my eye and got me interested in watches..

There are tonnes of watches on my 'to own one day' list, but I really do like the Moonwatches, I love the look and proportions of them (much more tasteful than a Daytona IMHO), the history and story behind them, the various rare and limited editions (white Snoopy is the dream)..

My 30th is less than 2 years away (ugh..) and I think I may just put some money aside for the occasion and get my first Swiss watch in the form of a Speedmaster.

Seeing that one can pick up an as-new boxed example for under RRP from a reputable dealer as listed above, is very promising.

Most grey dealers will sell these for under £3k so I really wouldn't pay any more than £2500 for a used example and there is absolutely no reason to buy one from an AD for anywhere near rrp. The strange think is though, they are such popular watches, with arguably the best history of any watch, I am sure Omega would do better by not selling them to grey dealers or discounting the rrp. Next to Rolex chronographs the moonwatch looks like an absolute bargain.

Sub-£3k really seems like a lot of watch for the money, all things considered
