Hi Everyone, a former casual observer now needs help. I apologise if this is a recurring theme but can't really find anything that answers my questions.
I am lucky enough to be picking up a new M4 comp pack in the next few weeks. I always get winter tyres for previous cars 328i, 335d, 435i but the M is on 20" alloys which for obvious reasons I would like to preserve.
I have already got a spare set of 19" wheels (442M's) from the 435 so my first question is would these fit on the M? I don't think the offset is the same but don't know if, with spacers, this could be remedied.
Assuming this is a no go what's the advice of the wheel/tyre combination without a)costing a bomb, b) keeping me alive if the weather does turn, c)not looking stupid on the car. Any suggestions of suppliers would be most appreciated as well. Sorry its a bit of a saga I'll try and keep it short in future.

The 442s will fit in terms of PCD - you could bolt them on, at least.

They won't sit the same, though...

I imagine the M4 comp pack is set up for better handling. Why ruin it with non-spec alloys and soft tyres? If you can afford it why not just buy a cheap car for winter and leave the M4 at home in really inclement weather?

I have a set of OE 641M's which are F8* M3/M4 specific fitted with Michelin Pilot Alpins. They don't have TPMS. From a fitment and offset point of view, they will be spot on. They're on ebay and I'm open to a sensible offer.

A set of BMW winter wheels and tyres would a good shout, don't listen to the guy saying get another car, M4/3 are fun in the snow with the right tyres and pretty capable for a 400hp+ RWD car.

I've driven through the last two winters on winter rubber even with the beast from the east and 1000ft moors to go over the car didn't let me down.

Thanks Wills tbh the post did make me smile. If I spent anymore money on another car I'd be sleeping in the thing because my missus would boot me out the house.

If you go for the winter wheels and tyre package you'll get 50% back when you come to sell them as well, I'm on 19" so just swap tyres but I can understand you wanting to keep those 20" pristine.

I also went down the BMW Winter wheel/tyre option - 19s and they make the car very capable in bad weather. That does remind me though I still have the Winter wheels from my old E92 in the garage - probably a good time of the year to sell them!

You mean after the roads were ploughed, treated and reopened. hehe The moors in the High Peak were shut for over 2 weeks with 6 foot drifts in places. With a saloon car's road clearance you'd have turned your car into a snow scoop within yards.

Winter tyres do not make a saloon invincible and an idiot is still just as likely to end up in a ditch if they don't heed the conditions.

I wouldn’t put the wrong size wheels and tyres on the car, surely will affect the way the car handles and behaves. Sell your old ones and get some alloys that are right for the M4.
I’m currently on the fence about getting some for the M5. Have been running winters for a while but we have two other cars with winter wheels so could just leave it at home if the weathers bad.

In the end I just went for tyre option. I've gone for the Pirelli Sottozero 3's. I'd be interested to know how the Michelin perform and I'll let you know how I get on.

I have a spare set of 437M wheels fitted with new Mich Alpin winters in standard F80 M3 sizes which I’m going to swap over once it’s a bit colder.

I missed an almost new set with Alpins for £1600. Local too !

I bought the 20’s with the thought i should get 3/4 winters from them...hopefully.

I saw those ones for £1600, they sold within a day. When I was looking for a set of 437M’s they all seemed to be curbed or marked in some way and top money with worn tyres. A few months back I spotted a set on eBay and messaged the guy who said they were had no marks and not curved plus they had new unused Mich Alpin on the rear. Bought them for £940 and then cost me £388 for the front Alpins. I don’t really need them as I don’t have to use my car in the winter but at that price i couldn’t refuse. I tend to keep my cars for a few years so thought why not.
