also interesting they quote a smaller turning circle for the sedan than the touring; not sure how that works as the wheelbase is the same and they're exactly the same up to the A pillar.

Quite a simple answer most likely

Test Touring came on 225 option tyres so may have had lock limiter tabs on rack ( many people confuse that with a quick rack although the ratio is the same. But the lock to lock number of turns is less )

Had the car looked at by my local Indy.
Lots of rust on the floor.
What’s the next step.....advice needed.

Of course its got rust on the floor its a 20+ yr old 3 series!

The real question is where and how bad is the rust/rot?

The best thing to do is take it for an MOT testers view and see what he says it needs doing (find a friendly little MOT garage and ask them to put it on the ramp and check for rot before you bring it back in for an MOT. Then you have a good idea of what the rust issues are (really are, not just what the BMW specialist said).

If its going to need welding find someone who just does welding and nothing else, get a quote from them. There will be someone nearby who specializes in welding (horrible job, most garages dont like doing this as low value, messy, time consuming work).

Carwow put a sorted 328 against a new i30N the other day. I thought it was going to be rather embarrassing for the older car as these things usually are but the old girl did well...

The quarter mile time was the same as that obtained for the 328 Touring by Autocar - 14.7 seconds
Albeit the Touring would have been carrying an extra bod - shows the cameraman’s car is still quite healthy though

That 328 did miles better than I was expecting when you consider the age gap. I always think that the performance of cars has moved on massively, yet in this case its proved it hasn't.

It’s roughly about right for a new one - well run in I guess

I wonder if it would have been even quicker on 16 inch alloys.

Maybe

Might have been even faster if it was one of the “specially tweaked factory specials” mentioned earlier in the thread too wink

I remember the 328 when they were launched.
The Autocar roadtest pointed out they were quicker 0-100 than the escort cosworth, which was held up as a performance icon of the day.
Was it not the case that some of the 'Germanic' cars reached Autocar with very different specifications to the actual cars sold. I recall a very strong set of figures being recorded for the Octavia VRS when that was released, somebody ended up with it and checked it out and it was rather more potent than it should have been.

The same thing was posted further up the page. It's a significantly tuned 328i, by the looks of it.

225 bhp is not a massive increase over stock as most cars were north of 200 bhp anyway. An M50 manifold and remap should get you 230 bhp + so not big bucks at all.

The i30N is not particularly fast IMO. And has a less engaging engine than the old banger BMW.

They often put out well over the quoted power even without a different filter. Even with a non-journo launch it turned in a 14.7, that’s the point

Do you have the full article? Interesting the weight is 1350Kg which I think is a bit lower than BMW's official number. Was this at a time when Autocar were weighing cars as part of each test?

Another reason against the M3 - at least 100Kg heavier. And the 328 is no lightweight.

I´ve got one, with leather sport seats cool someday it will run as it should, and that day...
