Not no more, if it's 40 years old or more and historic on the log book you can put b&w number plates on it. Even before the said new rules came in I'd like to think it was NOT on the high priority list to enforce it by the police force.
Old style b&w number plates are still only legal on cars manufactured before 1 Jan 1973. It's not a moving goalpost.
I think your find the laws changed in line with the road tax now. I might be wrong.
My driveway 10 years ago.

What’s happened to the rear lower right bumper... there’s some very dodgy Photoshop retouching going on. Suspension collapsed... sitting in a ditch? Weird!
I agree... I don't think that photo was originally taken on grass. Like it was lifted from a dodgy tarmac car park and put on grass.

My mum used to do the school in a white Stag when I was 5. I loved that car.

Err, the wood is nothing like original, in shade and finish. It's either bad repro, or more likely a replacement custom veneer job, as its gloss finish rather than matt, and its the wrong colour and pattern.

I can remember sitting in one of the very last unregistered ones left for sale in a BL showroom, after production had ended, when going with my Dad to get some parts for his 2000TC estate. My Dad had a huge desire to own a Stag at the time, but his job requirements meant having to own estate cars.

Here's original wood, in excellent condition wink

I absolutely loved my stag, best exhaust sound ever. Best of all I learned how to fix it! Timing chains and tensioners, water pump, radiator, head gaskets, petrol tank, differential and exhaust system, not forgetting the ignition system.Only sold it because I was getting married and needed the cash.

For all the 'I think' and 'As far as I know' comments, the law is clear. Everything from 01.01.1973 has to have reflective/white plates at the front/yellow at the rear, as emperorburger correctly states. Before that, black & silver is acceptable. Here's the current information from the DVLA: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/governmen... Go straight to page 8 if you're in a hurry.

The confusion(?) possibly stems from the tax and MOT rules, which indeed have changed.
Tax: currently cars built before 1978 or registered before 7th January 1978 are exempt.
MOT: cars registered 'more than 40 years ago' are exempt.

Never got the love for these if I'm honest. I remember thinking they were rubbish when they were new and now they're 40 yr old rubbish. Although I admit that many are in better running order now having been looked after by people with enthusiasm and who care, as opposed to Red Robbo and his mob of workshy layabouts who built them originally.

It would be OK if you could lose that stupid roll bar thingy.

Sorry...not for me.

Last para of Section 7:

Traditional number plates for vehicles made
before 1 January 1973
Vehicles made before 1 January 1973 may display
traditional ’black and white’ number plates (for example,
white, silver or grey characters on a black plate).
Since April 2018 vehicles manufactured before 1 January
1978 can display the older style plates. You must:
•have applied to DVLA
•be registered within the ‘historic vehicles’ tax class.
Vehicles constructed 40 or more years ago are exempt
from tax. The 40 year exemption date rolls forward
automatically each year on 1 April.

Well spotted. I stand corrected.

The odd car or two did have black and silver plates fitted after the '73 cut off date, there are some photos knocking about of David Bowie in an N reg'd Merc convertible taken at Victoria station with old style plates on in 1974 / 75. Also, one of the earliest magazine reviews of the LP400 Countach showed the test car with black and silver N reg' plates.

Edit : found them...

Nice Merc, but I'd prefer a Stag wink

Good spot. The crowd doesn't look very receptive though...

one of the specialists was converting a GTE to convertible, so it was possible.

The GTC was designed by Ogle Designs and actually used the roof frame from the Stag.

Back in the 70's my parents bought a new extendable dining table.

To protect this beautiful piece of furniture my dad had the guys at Triumph in Canley (where he worked) fashion table protectors.

There were two made, one for the normal size table and one for extended

They were made from Stag burgundy lined roof material !

They are still on the table now !
