The last, muscle bound 2CV was 602 cc - or was it 603cc? I should know , I owned one.

But being able to answer this - and all but one of the random anorak questions does not in any way mean I am a suitable TG presenter . The most important criterion , by a HUGE margin, is being good in front of a TV camera . One reason why that most erudite motoring journalist, the late Russell Bulgin , never had much joy on TV . He appeared now and again but never looked relaxed, was about 3 feet too tall, and had a surprisingly lightweight voice .

Mind you I'd pay good money to have seen a show hosted by the late Denis Jenkinson and LJK Setright , But perhaps not accompanied by that shrieking harpie Sabine Schmidt eh ? .

His personality seems perfectly agreeable, but I’ve never met him to be honest. It’s just either him, or the people who produce and edit his shows, seem to really milk a stereotype he may or may not fit in to. Gets everyone all misty eyed, wishing they could go down the pub with him for a pint of warm ale and a crack about old spanners.
That's mostly just him tbh. I don't see how being a genuine (if unusual) person is "milking a stereotype".

He's a bloke who values hard work and interests over being fake or pretentious. I mean, he's done what he's done in terms of TV and Motorcycle racing, earnt plenty of money, yet still gets up at 5am to do a 12 hour shift on trucks and tractors. Most people like him because he's a genuine example of a fading stereotype.

Can't see him wanting to do any regular/comfortable TV work at any stage, tbh. At this stage, it seems C4 just pay him to let them film him do the stuff he wants to do.

Hey BBC? How about a new show? Strictly Top Gear on Ice...that should appeal to the Gogglebox numpties!
Haha excellent first post! (after all these months!).

What is funny reading this and also the comments on the similar Radio 2 threads for the breakfast show and drive time shows is how difficult it must be to find presenters that appeal to everyone on these mainstream shows.

It looks like its 50/50 love hate on most of the suggested presenters - an impossible situation for the producers to find people liked by all.

Oh dear. I am not looking forward to this.
Paddy I don't find remotely funny and Freddie is a cricket bloke who finds motor racing boring.

Rory was clearly the weak link amongst Harris and MLB so I was looking forward to seeing less of him. I did not like him for the same reasons I do not like Tim Westwood. But with PmG and FF I'd expect them to be all equally as bad.

If Harris is smart he'll try to avoid any studio time. He was bad before and I can't see things improving.

At least we've got one more season with MLB smile

Flintoff is very good on the podcast with Robbie savage and Matthew syed, asks interesting questions, offers great anecdotes and is a lot more than a northern monkey who can spin a cricket ball. It will be fine, calm down.

Saying that I’d happily watch a quality car show with none of the cringeworthy arsing about it’s not funny or entertaining, hire car guys likes of Henry Catchpole and Harry Metcalfe who are supremely interesting to listen to and most importantly know all about cars, I’d absolutely keep Chris Harris but let him be himself and sit back and enjoy quality car reviews.
Henry Catchpole is brilliant....a true petrolhead who genuinely knows his stuff. A rare breed. His channel makes a refreshing and intelligent change from the usual super diluted mainstream guff from what little competition there is.

Nothing against McGuiness but following the most dire and puerile infamous Chavtastic take me out it seems the BBC have hired the equivalent of a double glazing salesman to sell bespoke supercars.

I predict a serious short term fail.

So why no Sabine ?

She's someone who can drive a bit quick and always seemed to be having fun doing it when she was on the last series - perhaps get her on to do some quick laps around Nurburgring in some new stuff, some older stuff and some more unusual stuff as well, perhaps a bit of modding to something dull over a number of episodes to make it faster? (my idea, you read it here first so I'll take a third, sign me up..!)

Because she's a screechy banshee who commentates like fingers dragging down a blackbort, ja?

I agree, No hate towards Sabine she's an excellent driver but it seems the BBC doesn't care much about that and between her and Chris Harris there isn't alot between them in terms of Driving ability i'd imagine.
Sabine unfortunately just isn't great as a presenter and humour is non-existant in her parts

I used to think that, and then they put her on TV, and I had my answer.

+1 in principle for LJKS. But you know what, I suspect I'd have probably been more interested in paying good money to have dinner with him in Surbiton (and smoke a nice Sobraine Black Russian afterwards) than watching him on television.

I only saw him appear once, as a "talking head" (very briefly) on The Car's The Star episode about the Citroen DS. He came across as one might imagine a 1950s (albeit rabbidic) newsreader to be - "presenting" his lines to the camera rather than engaging with the viewer behind it.

Talking engagingly to people about a subject is hard. The TG trio do it very well. There are few who can match them when they're "on it" - hence why they had the most valuable franchise on the planet.

hehe

Using bbc logic, they could use David Dimbleby from 'Question Time' as the new captain slow.
