The thing is, it's still trendy to talk down Aston's attempts to muscle in on markets where other manufacturers have ruled the roost for a while, and if we cut to the chase, are they truly any pretty SUV's in the world? I cant think of any that are attractive as such, just varying degrees of "function over form" through to brute / statement of intent monster barges like the Urus and Cullinan. Will Ferrari's SUV effort be judged more favourably, who knows...

These camo'd development cars in lairy colours exist as much to get people talking, as they do to develop cars in the real world. The eventual production DBX will probably look quite smart, but the dislike of it might be the very principal of its existence.

But a 'pretty' SUV wouldn't work. Just as a 'pretty' muscle wouldn't work. Sportscars/supercars/soft-tops/Hollywood actresses..yes, Pretty is a sought after requirement. But an SUV should be styled accordingly.

The best looking super-SUV on the market at present, IMO, is the Urus.

100% I was behind a red on in traffic a couple of nights ago and it was a lot less ostentatious than I expected...almost subtle (certainly less 'try hard' than all the over-styled Hondas, Toyotas and Lexus - Lexi?). All I know is that before I saw one in the metal I was not fussed - now I want one. I mean REALLY want one.

You are right that my above comment is somewhat a stereotype. It wasn't meant in a bhy way, more just matter of fact.

I don't have a strong dislike of this DBX or other SUV's in general, but as I say, it's just not really my cup of tea. I do think the profile has a bit of a Jukey shape, and it has got the recycled Aston face. This is hardly a scathing critique.

I'm not going to be silenced just because I hold an opinion that's perceived by you as negative or differing to yours.

But it still backs up my point. Like/dislike. Free choice, but bhing about those with opposing views via cliched/crass stereotypes is a little pathetic.

FWIW, over 80% of large SUVs are bought by men and over 70% of Aston Martins are bought by men.

Of all the owners of FFRR/Bentaygas/Urus/Cullinans/etc I know, men love them, women don't on the whole. Those that drive them typically do so under an element of duress.

Dozens at my daughter's school, many of the mums would rather be in a smaller car/SUV.

On the engine front, the technical partnership with DB / AMG was to produce a bridge between a V8 engine designed in the early 2000's, and bring in something competitive in the present day, things had moved on greatly, and the Bi-turbo V8 is the best in the business so it made sense to make use of it while adding sprinkles of Aston to make it drive and feel different to an AMG application (which they've been very successful at).

Going foward, the Aston developed V6 (to be used in the next Vanquish and AM-RB003) would be taking over on the small capacity front, and the AM31 V12 (which has zilch to do with Merc) would continue for the high-end applications. At that point comments along the lines of "it's just a Merc with a different body" become even less factually accurate, as at most, it would be an infotainment system only.
