RE: Lamborghini Miura: Pic of the Week

Picture the scene... your name is Marcello Gandini, you are twenty six years old and have just arrived at the your new employer's premises and been given your first job. A GT40-esque hand built chassis with a rear transverse mounted quad cam V12 arrives from the Turin Motor show and you're tasked with clothing it with the best fitting skin you can conjure up, using a brief outline sketched by the previous encumbent of your new position. With your twenty year old assistant Piero Stroppa by your side, the two of you occupying the vast open space at the top of the Bertone factory, within just a few weeks you come up with the most beautiful shape imaginable which looks 'right' the first time, as if it were penned by the gods, almost every detail is 'just so' and it takes everyone's breath away...
It's a breathtaking design, certainly one of the best looking cars ever made, and while it's not the last word in driving dynamics, it's nowhere near as challenging as people make out. Harry Metcalf's review is pretty accurate in my view. The main thing, as mentioned earlier, is whether you fit. Beyond that, you just have to tune into 60s dynamics. It works if you can drive what's in front of you, rather than what you think it should be. It's a rather special experience actually, dominated by the engine and drivetrain, you can never forget that the business end is right there behind your head. Even my 19 year old son was under it's spell, one sunny summer afternoon on a swooping country road. Fabulous.
