are cars now more about electronics than chassis design and driver enjoyment?
Sadly, in 2018, yes

I think it looks good. If the rear overhang were smaller, it would look great. If you're looking at this on a phone, stick your thumb over the profile shot of the bronze car about where the rear light cluster ends, and imagine the rear end finishing there.

No doubt it's a decent car but there is no escaping that for a £100k car the interior is terribly bland. Boring in the extreme. I'd imagine it will be well built and the materials of good quality but I was expecting much much more. I'm oot.

A bit predictable and unimaginative.

Nothing innovative here.

I think the market is starting to look for something new and this level.

I fear this car is going to sink without trace in 5 years or so.
I don’t mean this to be antagonistic but what would you consider to be innovative in a huge luxury coupe?

Handsome beast. The only small disappointment for me is the slightly elongated front overhang when compared to BMWs of old. Otherwise I think it looks great.

The rear is so easy peasy Japanesee. Almost Infiniti like. Very messy.

Hope an aftermarket solution becomes available.

That's a shame, because I'm sure BMW were counting on your money to secure one wink

With all due respect, are you really in the market for a £100k car? Your profile suggests a Nissan Juke, older 1 series and a shed of a 7 series?

What, wait?

You're going to do £100k or so on a car that you're not that keen on, and then spunk a few few more £ks on an aftermarket kit (I'm going to guess here though - I'll bet my house that there isn't an 'alternative back end kit for the brand new BMW 8-series' on the market yet) to make the back end look more acceptable to your very specific eyes?

I fking love this place sometimes.

Random biggrin!

This car would absolutely suit me for my everyday car..but I could not live with that total mess that is the rear bumer of this car...Another similar car is the Discovery...A company made a simple kit to allow the fitment of the plate in the middle of the rear door and it's a 100pc improvement. Hoping the same simpe chanhe happens for this too.

Firstly, if you couldn't live with the looks of the rear end, BMW simply don't care.

Secondly, you make a mistake in presuming people who buy this car care about it as much a people care about their Land Rovers... and even in the case of that plate conversion kit, how many people out of those who bought that car actually spent money, bought that kit and had it fitted? I can't imagine anyone who leased one would have, for a start. I literally live right beside a Land Rover dealership and I can confirm I've NEVER seen that kit fitted to any Land Rover whatsoever around here...

Seriously, what makes you think anyone would go to the effort and trouble to re-design the entire rear end of this 8-series (not a simple number-plate position change - an entire rear end of a new car!) when the market of people who would be bothered enough to spend several thousand to do so (and, in the UK at least, totally destroy what little re-sale value there would be once depreciation did its thing) couldn't recover the development spend?rolleyes

They've actually got to sell some before they are available used in a couple of years' time - that'll be the difficult bit.
Why no electric / hybrid option?

I like the side and front but the back is an over styled mess, I would far rather have another Maserati GranTurismo S than one of these.
Yes the Maserati is older, slower, and out of date but it is far more special, has an incredible engine, looks far nicer and will hold its value better, especially when you consider that it is one of the last cars with a naturally asperated Ferrari engine.

Leaves me cold. Want to like it - but leaves me cold. No glass roof - I'm sure it feels like in a grotto. And the interior design - sigh. And that weight!!! And I don't get the market positioning. Naaa, sorry no.

The back of this is a mess, and the huge plastic grill (that so many german cars sport these days) looks hideous. The review seemed underwhelming, and while the M8 will no doubt be fast, I suspect it will be rather characterless.

You'd have to be one hell of a BMW fan to buy this over the competition. A used Conti, or DB11. Or S coupe if you want space. This is just not special enough
Never mind a used car, you could get a new 911 for this money.
The irony is that is exactly what I did some years ago. Test drove an AMG CL, and ended up with a 911!

Am pondering a bigger coupe again as my kids are older. Had a Conti GT which I liked but was very unreliable. The reality is I look at this and it doesn't even register as a car I'd consider and I must be the target market. I appreciate personal taste is a big factor, but for the money there are many more special cars to choose. And before anyone suggests I'm a badge snob, I own a 5 series estate, so I'm not averse to BMWs per se
