Site's been unbearable to use on mobile (Chrome). Takes ages to load the page and if you click on something it will then go to something else.

The PH community grew around this design over 9 years ago. It has stagnated and dwindled since
Has it dwindled that much? To my mind the subforums still seem as busy as they were a decade ago. There's been several charts posted that show a decline in searches for "pistonheads", but that only shows a decline for that search term and gives no indication as to how many reach PH through long tail searches, something that a traditional forum layout with good information buried in it still seems to do well at.
This.

Anecdotally, I've lost count over the years of how many times a PH thread has popped up as the answer of a random internet search, many of which weren't motoring related.

(Though admittedly I can't count very high...)

Just as a point of order though, wasn't it someone from CTF who called out PH when one particular N P & E thread went seriously racist and PH moderation appeared to completely ignore it.
I think that was one of TKF's many alter egos who posted some excerpt from Mein Kampf on the Calais Migrant Madness thread and had it shut down. Much backslapping on CTF after that one.

Blatters, but that has since closed down.

CTF is dead, had a total of 59 posts in a day when I looked last week.

So we should keep our fingers crossed re PH.

This site must have the record for the most, in terms of numbers, miserable old gits in a single place on the internet smile
Nothing lasts for ever, I imagine that those of us who were more active 5, 10, 15+ years ago have moved on as lives evolve. The next generation are using more dynamic platforms, and long drawn out conversations on a place which has a reputation for slightly misogynistic, thickly set company directors are probably not all that appealing for a driver generation which wasn’t born when PH started. This place was once exciting and cutting edge, and like a bar which was once the place to hang out, it reminds us.. nothing goes out of fashion quicker than fashion.

Forums are social media, so is a quarterly printed club mag, and as you say facebook has been here for years and is used by adults not kids.

But usage changes all the time, I used to take a few good photos on a digital camera and upload via pc to fb. Then I took a stack on my phone and shared them, now I go on less and less and have come back to forums more, currently mainly this one. It's all in a permanent state of flux but equally there is a lot of resilience as well. I posted in here a decade ago, left, came back.

I agree.

If you go on Reddit or twitter you first think wtf, This is nonsense and impossible to follow.

Then after a while you figure out how it works and once you get the feel of it, they’re both fantastic sources of information.

Like here though, it’s also about how you access the platform with settings and favourites and filters etc.

I've been using Reddit (reluctantly I might add, but a niche hobby of mine only features on there) for around a decade and it's no better today than it was the day I joined. It's still the same jumbled mess of comments with absolutely no logical order at all and whether you see someone's post depends entirely on how many sockpuppets they have upvoting it. If someone posts who tends to be a bit controversial in their opinions then within 2 minutes the post has disappeared from view because 300 perma-offended snowflakes have all downvoted it into the weeds. I don't want that st happening on my screen. I want to see ALL posts in the order that they were posted and *I* be the one to make the decision whether or not I feel someone's post is worth reading, not a computer algorithm or an angry mob of perma-offendeds.

Since Instagram arrived Twitter's only purpose now is to generate traffic and clicks to content posted elsewhere, typically news websites. The notion of have long forum-esque discussions on Twitter is laughable. I see many people trying it but no matter how you try to dress it up, making 64 separate tweets to say what you want to say is just absurd. The way that replies are ordered is the same jumbled mess that Reddit uses so it's impossible to follow anything. People don't want to be scrolling up and down all the time looking for the latest replies, which is exactly what you have to do with both Reddit and Twitter. A forum performs that function by default hence why despite all the claims they are "dead" and "finished" they continue to count for a large part of the internet.

It's also quite amusing (for me at least) to see the people complaining about forums being dead/finished and how Reddit, Twitter, Facebook and other 'proper' social media platforms are the place to be are more often than not the ones with a high post count smile. This begs the question why are they spending all their time here using antiquated forum technology with all the luddites and grandads and why are they not with all the 'cool' technologically advanced people using these fancy purpose made social media platforms that are apparently the place to be now? Could it perhaps have something to do with the fact that most people find one line replies about as interesting to read as watching paint dry and yearn for a much deeper level of conversation? idea I do believe that brings us full circle to why forums exist and will continue to do so.smile

Then change your settings to show comments in time order and not to hide comments with low ratings...

Don't you think in 10 years I might have already investigated that? It doesn't work and still shows you only the comments it wants you to see and can't split replies to previous posts into chronological order, so it's completely useless. I've even had discussions about it in the Reddit support groups and there's thousands of other users with the same complaint but Reddit don't bother to reply and you're directed to use RES instead which changes around a few layout and notification aspects but is unable to alter the underlying architecture of how the posts are ordered.

It's a bit odd to want all comments in chronological order, rather than split into threads. How on earth would you keep track of who is replying to who?

I guess reddit just isn't for you and apparently a few thousand other people. Are you sure you need to use it? You sound pretty upset they won't make sweeping changes to the platform for you.

You can't. That's exactly what the problem is. The way the reply 'tree' works coupled with their algorithm and 'vote' system makes it impossible to find the latest posts. It doesn't matter which layout you choose from the options you still find yourself reading the same replies that you read 6 hours ago when you first saw the thread, even though the counter says there's been 50 new posts in the topic in between times, yet you can't find any of them because the snowflakes have downvoted them or they've been buried 20 posts deep at the bottom of a thread 'tree' somewhere.

Someone should copy one of their 'build' threads from here and put it on Reddit. It would perfectly demonstrate my point as the way Reddit organises the posts would show the author hooning down the road in his completed hotrod before he'd even bought the shell. wobble

His last recorded post was Sept 21st, the poster you allude to registered on sept 23rd.

I'll leave the obvious conclusion to you.

His posting style was/is unmistakeable.

The threat to email Heseltine's secretary to complain about PH was comedy gold.
