eibach pro street setup, whiteline ARB kit and a haldex controller.not much change out of £1500 for that lot but will be a fantastic car
Despite owning many Audi's, I've never been a particular fan of the TT. However, after my son bought a 225 Coupe which has a relatively low mileage, I took a spin.
Really quite surprised, I'm not convinced a lot of the negative hype is justified but some at least more of a jump on the bandwagon. Ok, on a track, no doubt the understeer will kick in, but even driving fairly brisk on a public road, I found it quite entertaining. I'm no Stig, but I reckon you'd have to be driving at a fairly borderline pace to get it to misbehave on a normal road.
The Mk1 has surely long lost the now outdated 'hairdresser's car' tag. I found myself quite liking it's quirky looks and the quirky interior in a way I'd not previously paid attention. So much so, I went and bought one. Glad now I did!!
When I sit in it, it has lastest the test of time, as it still feels fresh in a way I can't imagine any other 20 year old car (design wise).

The TT is a bit of a marmite car isn't it. I must admit I never really cared for them, but now they're nearly 20 years old they're starting to grab my attention simply because they offer quite a lot really for the bargain basement prices being asked for. According to Car magazine in their 2000 feature, the TT was a match in a straight-line for the UK Impreza Turbo and whilst they may not offer much in the way of handling feedback I bet they're still a quick car point to point.
According to CAR magazine, the TT was their best-handling everyday car of 1999.....cmw85 said:
I can confirm that the ESP retrofit was "Free" at the time. The cars had to go back to Germany to have it done and the owner got to smoke around in an Audi supplied A6 for the 6 weeks or so that it took. I worked for an Audi dealer in Edinburgh at the time...
Wow. That must have cost Audi a complete fortune! Good lurking too BTW.

Completely agree. Hated them and the image and Golf platform but now the bloody thing has got under my skin.Really quite surprised, I'm not convinced a lot of the negative hype is justified but some at least more of a jump on the bandwagon. I had fatter ARBs on the front and back of my 225 coupe. I forget the brand, but it was a reputable one. It transformed the handling, tbh. Hugely improved the turn-in, and left very little body roll. Left you massively more confident on twisty roads. It made roundabouts more fun.
I didn't make any other suspension mods; didn't feel like I needed to.

I'd get on to the UK TT forum site and have a browse, there's a lot of discussion on there about various modifications. smaybury said:

Standard were thinner than the ones found on the Golf R32. Thinking back it was the R32 ones I replaced with and not Leon.
After the modification it seemed to be a little bit sharper turn ins and less prone to understeer.
Yeah, it's R32 arbs that are very popular for the TT, very effective. After the modification it seemed to be a little bit sharper turn ins and less prone to understeer.
