Carbon, Ultegra, mech discs.

Looks like the frame is open mould and has been commonly used for other makes, does that make it a bad thing?

Everything else with Ultegra and any discs is 1300+ in 2018 form, usually more.

Should I? If not,what should I get?!

ETA: This my possible alternative. Looks tedious, old 105, but "better" frame perhaps?

CRC have said before that the Vitus frame is an open mold design, and the Viner does look a lot better, and as much as I don't like the FSA cranks, given the reliability of the Ultegra ones, they might not be a bad choice...

I have the non disc minus 0.6. Good bike, light enough and pretty stiff.

I wouldn't touch planetx, partly because of their customer service. Partly because their bikes ride like dull pigs.

1k is not cheap yet you are getting a cheap chassis dressed in ok bits.

I sold my 2017 Cannondale Ultegra Supersix in mint condition for 890. I bought my almost new (less than 30miles) 2018 Cannondale Synapse Disc for 1,000 including Giro shoes and cleats.

I'd much rather buy something secondhand than a very average PlanetX or CRC bike.

Do you HAVE to buy new?

Looks good value to me. I suspect the frame is closely related to the PX RTD-90, which I've had fault-free for 13,000 miles in 2 years. As you say, it's a generic Chinese frame. It's plenty stiff enough for someone of my ability. In fact I can't imagine any modern frame flexing enough to make a material difference at my level. (Indeed I see the whole stiffness thing as a bit of marketing hype - but that's off topic!)

If it's the same frame, then 25mm front and 28mm rear are the widest tyres I can sensibly fit. A modern frame might allow wider. Also, thru-axles would be nice on a disk frame - I find QR's slacken over time and bumps. Some say Avid mechanical discs are poor - I've no experience, but found TRP Spyres OK and Juin Tech hybrids even better.

I built my bike from frame up so can't really comment on PX customer service. But I've never had to return any parts or clothing I've bought subsequently.

As said above, you might get better value if you buy s/h. I'd started down that route but after 3 weeks I'd failed to find something desirable in my size, let alone within reasonable travel distance, so gave up. Many of the parts I used to build the bike were s/h though.

I don't have to buy new, but as above, finding something the right size, anywhere close, that has anything other than dubious provenance, has been proving a challenge.

eBay was good for me. If they can provide receipts fine.

I also bought a used Brompton off eBay a month ago offering a off auction price.

Pinkbike works great for me too.

Lots of people buy bikes, have great intentions but never ride them. thieves can't prove Providence and mostly have bad knowledge about said bike.

The frame is fine. Stiff, light, but the ride can be a bit harsh compared to more expensive options.

I would not buy a bike with cable discs though, it’s kind of the worst of all worlds. Either rim or hydros are fine.

Wheels are heavy.

FSA is fine.

Got one, first carbon bike, I bought the frame and built up, 105 hydro and mavic wheels, very comfy compared to my my alloy London Road. I did think I had an issue with the frame which actually turned out to be a wheel issue.

Yeah i had a good look over their bikes when i was in store and seems the have some very good deals.
They had some 40mm wide sun ringle mtb wheels with tyres, not sure of the hubs for £249,sun ringle make stans rims plus they make rims for other big manufacturers.

Another good buy if your after a not too expensive set of wheels

Ultegra being the trade off for the alu frame and rim brakes on that I guess, I have got an awkward price point haven't I!?

I am taking the been-on-sale-for-months-presumably-because-it's-hardly-a-looker Vitus as the "benchmark" really, which is full carbon (from a stock mould it seems) plus clearance 105 (the older 5800 version) with rim brakes for a grand. There are others about, like at the "do you risk the customer service?" Cycle Republic where a skip bike gives £100 off this 2018 Genesis Zeal https://www.cyclerepublic.com/genesis-zeal-20-mgt-...

I have missed a few carbon bikes with higher groupsets at the same price (the Fuji's that CRC and Wiggle have had on clearance had Ultegra and were also ~999) which is annoying but there you do, and what I'd quite like thanks to the extensive debate on here about discs, is them too.

Appreciate I'm dreaming to get new 105 or Ultegra/ full carbon and hydro discs for 4 figs on the nose, and I don't mind going up a few hundred to get all of them, but it seems it will be something with some other drawback, be that a Ribble, whatever from Decathlon or Planet-X, which a lot of people on here appear to swear by, so it's interesting to have some different experience!

I would bear in mind that the carbon frame wont be the be all and end all and the alu one might well ride much better as cheap carbon can have a harsh ride.

ive ridden high end carbon frames and cheap ones and the latter isnt that nice and like i said id prefer alu with a carbon fork.

Just food for thought

One more thing - a really good LBS can set up even cheap cable disc brakes to perform brilliantly.

Cycle Shed in Llandaff, Cardiff being the example I had in mind. They made Avid BB5 work unbelievably well.

I'd take mechanical discs over rim brakes every time.

My mechanical discs on my CX are low tech. 105 shifters with Avid bb7 (low end of the range)
Much better all round braking performance and in another Leage to my the direct mount rim brakes on my nice bike.

I would not get that hung up on the open mould frame. I'd be amazed if some riders could tell the difference between open mould and spesh tarmac carbon frame.

Buying a used Brompton is easy as the only variation is the seat post. Not really the same as buying a road bike.

In short, the Vitus will be fine 🙂. Nothing wrong with a FSA crank either.
